Retrospective exhibition even though he’s not dead…? Jin Katagiri is holding a “large scale solo exhibition”!
A collection of 380 works gathered together! Some of the paintings were taken from the walls of his parents' house.
Katagiri said, “I’ve brought all of my artworks from the past 20 years, or even from my childhood. It’s like a retrospective exhibition, even though I’m not dead, so I hope people of all ages will enjoy it.
This is what comedian and actor Jin Katagiri, 48, said at Tokyo Dome City Gallery AaMo in Korakuen, Tokyo, on November 19. From November 20 to December 19, Katagiri’s solo exhibition “20th Anniversary of the Way of Clay: Katagiri’s Creations” is being held at the same venue.
For the past 20 years, Katagiri has been practicing an activity called “Clay Road” in which he creates artworks based on the concept of “heaping clay onto all kinds of things, including stationery, daily necessities, and electrical appliances. About 380 pieces were gathered, including those works and Katagiri’s paintings from his childhood. As this was his largest solo exhibition ever, he also created his largest work ever. Katagiri showed a huge work, “Park Demon,” measuring 5 meters wide and 4 meters high, which he said he had been working on until the last minute. The motif of the work was an octopus park in Miyashiro-machi, Saitama Prefecture, where Katagiri was born and raised, and it was made with 6.77 million yen raised through crowdfunding.
Mr. Katagiri has also held solo exhibitions in Taiwan. When asked by the moderator where he would like to hold a solo exhibition in the future, Katagiri said, “I would like to do one in New York or Europe.
I’d like to do one in New York or Europe. I would like to do one in New York or Europe, but I think it would be difficult to do one on this scale, either in Japan or overseas. This is my first and last retrospective exhibition, so I hope people will come.
