Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day doesn’t look 53 at all

In late February, Billie Joe Armstrong (53), the frontman of the American punk rock band Green Day, was greeted with enthusiastic cheers from fans at Shin-Osaka Station. The band had arrived in Japan for their tour, which began on February 21.

“They were the pioneers of the 1990s punk rock boom, and their 1994 album Dookie sold over 10 million copies in the U.S. alone, with worldwide sales exceeding 20 million. One of its tracks, Basket Case, topped the Modern Rock chart and has become a staple at their live shows.

Their 2004 album American Idiot won ‘Best Rock Album’ at the 47th Grammy Awards, making them the first punk rock band to achieve this honor. Their total global sales exceed 75 million copies, and their music videos have amassed over 10 billion views. Over their 30-year career, they have won five Grammy Awards and remain at the top of the punk rock scene,” says a music magazine journalist.

Their Japan tour, originally scheduled for 2020, was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and no rescheduled performances were held. As a result, this visit marked their first time in Japan in 15 years. After their Osaka concert, they appeared at Shin-Osaka Station on their way to their next performance in Nagoya, where a large crowd of fans awaited them, cameras flashing. Billie waved to the gathered fans and smiled confidently.

In Japan, Green Day is often referred to as a youth punk band, but they have consistently voiced anti-war messages and are known for their strong political statements.

“Billie, in particular, has been outspoken in his criticism of U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration and Elon Musk. At a concert in Washington last July, he held up a mask of Trump labeled ‘IDIOT’ while performing.

During a concert in Johannesburg, South Africa, this past January, he altered the lyrics of American Idiot to say, ‘I’m not a part of the Elon agenda,’ taking a direct jab at Elon Musk, which stirred significant attention,” the journalist adds.

However, at their Osaka concert on February 21, they avoided political statements. Without lengthy MC segments, they played continuously, inviting lucky fans onstage and even having Billie perform a solo rendition of Linda Linda by The Blue Hearts. They performed a total of 25 songs, mesmerizing the audience.

When will their next Japan tour be? Fans can hardly wait.
