On July 8, former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was killed by a bullet fired by unemployed suspect Tetsuya Yamagami.
In the Upper House election held immediately afterward on July 10, the LDP won an overwhelming 63 seats, the majority of seats up for re-election alone. The LDP succeeded in holding the two-thirds of the seats needed for constitutional reform with the strength of the ruling party.

Former Prime Minister Abe will be honored at a state funeral on September 27, but what has recently become a major issue in Nagata-cho is the &#8220;too-deep relationship&#8221; between the LDP and the former Unification Church.

The former Unification Church was deeply entrenched in Japan&#8217;s largest ruling party. As per the suspect&#8217;s aim, the group is expected to lose all of its power from this point on.
