<p><span class="strongInContent"> “It was to collect cells.”</span></p>
<p> The doctor, who is accused of sexually assaulting a female patient in the examination room, reportedly insists that it was merely part of the medical examination.</p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> “On August 25, ’26, the Ogikubo Police Station of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department arrested Fan Yu-ren (75), a Taiwanese national and director of Ogikubo International Hospital, on suspicion of non-consensual sexual intercourse and other charges.Shortly after noon on June 2, he is suspected of telling a female patient in her 20s, ‘Why don’t you get a gynecological exam?’ and inserting a sex toy into her genitals. This was one of several visits the woman had made to the clinic, and the two were alone in the examination room. The incident came to light after the woman, suspicious of the examination, reported it to the Metropolitan Police Department that same day.</span></p>

<p> Fan was transferred to the prosecutor’s office on August 27. Around 8:30 a.m., Fan appeared at the transfer gate in a wheelchair; he did not turn to face the gathered photographers, but occasionally cast sharp, glaring glances straight ahead.</p>

<p> Ogikubo International Hospital is located on the second floor of a mixed-use building about a five-minute walk from the West Exit of Ogikubo Station. According to its website, the clinic—which specializes in internal medicine, gynecology, and psychosomatic medicine—opened in June 2023.The clinic offers services in three languages—Japanese, English, and Chinese—and <span class="strongInContent">states, “Please feel free to consult us about any symptoms that concern you, ranging from everyday ailments to chronic diseases, women’s health issues, and mental health concerns</span>.”</p>
<p> When I visited after the incident, the clinic’s door was closed, and a notice was posted <span class="strongInContent">stating, “Due to internal circumstances, the clinic will be closed starting today for the time being.”</span></p>
<p> According to a man who works in the same building, <span class="strongInContent">“The door is usually open, and there’s a reception desk right in front with a young female receptionist. The clinic had a bright, welcoming atmosphere</span> that made it <span class="strongInContent">easy to walk in.”</span></p>
<p> A woman who works in the same building and learned of the incident from the news could not hide her surprise, saying, <span class="strongInContent">“He was such a friendly, nice person.”</span></p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> “Whenever I ran into her in the hallway or somewhere, she’d say ‘Hello’—she was that kind of friendly person. She’d ask, ‘How are you feeling?’ and showed concern for my health; I got the impression she was a kind doctor. Since I saw patients there almost every day, I’d say she must have had a good reputation.”</span></p>

<p> The social affairs reporter mentioned earlier also explained, <span class="strongInContent">“He had a good reputation among patients.”</span></p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> “Suspect Fan was a doctor with a proven track record, having previously served as director and chief of department at another hospital. Even after opening his current hospital, he seemed to have earned the deep trust of his patients, who said he ‘skillfully drew out their feelings and stress’ and ‘provided professional advice that instilled a sense of security,’” said the aforementioned social affairs reporter.</span></p>
<p> However, he was arrested this time following an allegation from a female patient that he had sexually assaulted her. While admitting to using a toy, Suspect Fan reportedly stated that he <span class="strongInContent">“only touched her lower body.”</span> Even if the act was truly <span class="strongInContent">“part of the medical treatment”</span> and <span class="strongInContent">intended “to collect cells,”</span> it is unlikely that a female patient would go so far as to report it to the police.</p>
<p> There is no doubt that the trust he had built up with his patients over the years has been severely damaged.</p>
