“Would You Like to Have a Gynecological Examination?” 75-Year-Old Hospital Director Arrested on Suspicion of Sexually Assaulting a Patient—What We Heard About His Unexpected Reputation

The doctor accused of sexually assaulting a female patient in an examination room reportedly insists that the act was part of a medical examination.

“On August 25, 2026, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s Ogikubo Police Station arrested Fan Yuren, 75, the Taiwanese-national director of Ogikubo International Clinic, on suspicion of non-consensual sexual intercourse and related offenses. Shortly after noon on June 2, he allegedly told a female patient in her 20s, ‘Would you like to have a gynecological examination?’ and inserted a sex toy into her genitals. This was not the woman’s first visit, and she was alone with him in the examination room. The case came to light after the woman, who found the examination suspicious, consulted the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department later that same day.

Fan was referred to prosecutors on August 27. At around 8:30 a.m., Fan appeared at the transport entrance in a wheelchair. He did not turn his face toward the assembled photographers and occasionally cast a sharp, almost glaring look straight ahead.

Ogikubo International Clinic occupies the second floor of a mixed-use building about a five-minute walk from the west exit of Ogikubo Station. According to its website, it opened in June 2023 as a clinic offering internal medicine, gynecology, and psychosomatic medicine. It provides services in Japanese, English, and Chinese, and states, “From everyday health concerns and chronic conditions to women’s health issues and mental health concerns, please feel free to consult us about any symptoms that concern you.”

When the clinic was visited after the incident, its door was closed, with a notice posted that read, “Due to circumstances within the clinic, we will be closed for medical services from today until further notice.”

A man who has an office in the same building said, “The door was normally open, with the reception desk right in front and a young female receptionist there. The inside of the clinic was bright and had an inviting atmosphere.”

A woman who also has an office in the building said she learned about the incident through the news and appeared unable to hide her surprise, saying, “He seemed like a friendly, nice person.”

“Whenever we happened to meet in the hallway, he would greet me by saying, ‘Hello.’ He was very approachable. He would also ask, ‘How are you feeling?’ and show concern for my health, so I had the impression that he was a kind doctor. I saw patients there almost every day, so I imagine he had a good reputation.”

The aforementioned crime reporter also explained that “he was well regarded by patients.”

“Fan had been an accomplished doctor, having previously served as a hospital director and head of a medical department at other hospitals. Even after opening his current clinic, he apparently earned considerable trust from patients, who said things like, ‘He is good at drawing out my feelings and stress’ and ‘He gives professional advice that makes me feel reassured.’” (The aforementioned crime reporter)

However, this time, he was arrested after a female patient accused him of sexual assault. Fan reportedly admitted to using a toy but said that “I only applied it to her lower body.” Even if the act really had been “part of a medical examination” and intended “to collect cells,” it is difficult to imagine a situation in which a female patient would go so far as to consult the police if that were truly the case.

There is no doubt that the trust he had built up among his patients over the years has been seriously damaged.
