Inside the Gunma Case That Left Two Children Dead and a Community Searching for Answers

The young children were found in a tragic state

According to neighbors, the household appeared to be a peaceful one consisting of a married couple and their two young children. The father also seemed to be an ordinary, decent person.

On July 6, the Gunma Prefectural Police arrested 42-year-old company employee Toshinori Inoue, from Isesaki City, Gunma Prefecture, on suspicion of strangling and killing his six-year-old daughter, Akari Inoue, a first-grade elementary school student. Nearby, the body of his three-year-old son, Shuri Inoue, was also found.

“According to the prefectural police, at around 8 p.m. on July 5, Inoue’s wife returned home and discovered the two children lying on their backs on a futon. She immediately called emergency services.

When police officers arrived after being contacted by the fire department, the two children had already died. Both bore marks on their necks that appeared to have been caused by strangulation. Several neckties believed to belong to Inoue were reportedly found near the bodies.

Inoue was not at home when the bodies were discovered, but about 30 minutes after the emergency call, he turned himself in at the Isesaki Police Station. During questioning, he reportedly stated that he had become pessimistic about his health and his family’s future and admitted that he had strangled his daughter and son with neckties and other items.

Inoue had been on medical leave since January because of health problems and was reportedly also worried about his financial situation. The prefectural police are continuing their investigation on the assumption that Inoue was responsible for Shuri’s death as well.” (National newspaper reporter)

At around 8:30 a.m. on July 7, Inoue was sent to prosecutors. Seated in the center of the rear seat of the police transport vehicle, he kept his head lowered and never once glanced at the cameras surrounding the car.

The Inoue residence, where the incident took place, was an elegant detached house in a quiet residential neighborhood about three kilometers from Isesaki Station, near a rural area.

“Inoue grew up in this district, and the house where the incident occurred was built on his parents’ property after he got married. He worked for a distribution company group headquartered in Gunma Prefecture and served as the manager of a large shopping center in Isesaki until October 2023. His work performance was reportedly highly regarded.

Although the shopping center eventually closed because of its age, he even delivered a speech during the closing ceremony. Afterward, he was transferred to another shopping center.” (Crime reporter)

Why did an ordinary father do this?

were fairly ordinary comments such as, ‘He seemed quiet, but he always greeted people when you passed by,’ and, ‘He was just a normal father. He didn’t seem intimidating at all.’ Several people had also seen him playing with his children at the park, so the general impression was that he was a good father.

He reportedly said that he had become pessimistic about the family’s future, but the police had received no reports or consultations regarding domestic problems, and none of the neighbors had witnessed any kind of trouble. What exactly had Inoue become so pessimistic about regarding the future of a family that everyone believed appeared happy? Taihei Ogawa, a crime journalist and former Kanagawa Prefectural Police detective, also raised several questions about the case.

“We have been told that he was worried about his financial situation, but until quite recently he had been working steadily, and the family home does not appear to have been rented. Just how severe were his financial difficulties? Did he never consider seeking public assistance?

I imagine that the interrogation is already underway, but another question is whether he is in a mental state that allows him to respond properly. We also need to know what his condition was like before he took leave from work. His wife is probably the person who knows best what he had been like recently, so the police are undoubtedly questioning her thoroughly.

Another issue is whether the crime was premeditated and where the suspect went afterward. Reports indicate that he had no external injuries when he was arrested, but it is possible that he attempted suicide, perhaps by throwing himself in front of a train.”

Why did he feel that he had to take the lives of such young children? The answer may emerge as the investigation continues.
