On July 6, the Gunma Prefectural Police arrested Toshinao Inoue (42), an office worker from Isesaki City, Gunma Prefecture, on suspicion of strangling his eldest daughter, Akari (6), a first-grader, to death.Next to Akari, her 3-year-old older brother, Shuri, had also passed away.

“According to the prefectural police, around 8:00 p.m. on the 5th, Inoue’s wife returned home and discovered the two children lying face-up on a futon; she then called 119.

Police officers who were notified by the fire department rushed to the scene, but the two had already died. Both had marks on their necks consistent with strangulation, and several ties believed to belong to Inoue were reportedly found lying near the bodies.

Suspect Inoue was not at home when the bodies were discovered, but he turned himself in at the Isesaki Police Station about 30 minutes after the call was made. During questioning, he stated, ‘I was pessimistic about my own health and my family’s future,’ and ‘I strangled my eldest daughter and son to death with a tie and other items.’Suspect Inoue had been on medical leave since January of this year and reportedly stated that he was also worried about his financial situation. The prefectural police are proceeding with their investigation on the assumption that Suspect Inoue also committed the murder of Hiiragi-kun.” (Social Affairs Reporter, National Newspaper)

Around 8:30 a.m. on July 7, Inoue was transferred to the prosecutor’s office. Seated in the center of the back seat of the police van, Inoue sat with his gaze fixed downward, without so much as a glance at the cameras surrounding the vehicle.

The scene of the crime—Suspect Inoue’s home—was an elegant single-family home located in a quiet residential neighborhood near rural farmland, about 3 km from Isesaki Station.

“Suspect Inoue is a native of this area, and the home where the incident occurred was built on his parents’ property after he got married.He worked for a retail group headquartered in Gunma Prefecture and served as store manager at a large shopping center in Isesaki until October ’23; it is believed he was highly regarded for his work. Although the store closed due to deterioration, he reportedly gave a speech at the closing ceremony. After that, he worked at another shopping center,” said a crime reporter.

Why would an “ordinary dad”…

Suspect Inoue’s reputation among his neighbors didn’t seem to be bad.

“When we interviewed people, we heard nothing but neutral comments like, ‘He seems quiet, but he always greets you properly when you pass by,’ and ‘He’s just an ordinary dad. He doesn’t seem scary at all.’ Several people had seen him letting his children play in the park, and they seemed to have the impression that he was a ‘good dad.’

“It’s said he was ‘pessimistic about his family’s future,’ but he never consulted the police about domestic issues or contacted them, and no one in the neighborhood had seen or heard of any trouble. Everyone is scratching their heads, saying, ‘They seemed like such a happy family,’” (ibid.)

What exactly did suspect Inoue find so bleak about the future of a family that everyone thought “looked happy”? Regarding this case, which is shrouded in mystery, crime journalist Taihei Ogawa also raises the following questions.

“It’s been reported that he ‘had financial anxieties,’ but he had been working steadily until very recently, and it doesn’t appear they were renting their home. To what extent was he actually struggling? Did he never consider applying for public assistance?

I assume the suspect’s interrogation is already underway, but I’m also concerned about whether he is in a condition to answer questions properly. Also, what was his state of mind like before he took time off from work? Since his wife would know best about his recent behavior, the police are likely questioning her in detail.

Other questions include whether the crime was premeditated and where the suspect went after the crime. Although he didn’t appear to have any visible injuries at the time of his arrest, there’s also the possibility that he attempted suicide, such as by jumping in front of a train.”
