In the mid-Edo period, the study of natural history known as “honzōgaku” (materia medica) flourished. Works such as the “Wakan Sansai Zue” (upper right), which introduced yōkai alongside various animals and plants, reflected a more objective and scholarly approach to supernatural beings.
