Predawn Assault Rocks Kabukicho: Witnesses Recall a Frightening Few Minutes of Chaos

Tragedy on Kuyakusho Street in the early morning
At around 3:40 a.m. on May 16, four men were attacked on a street in Tokyo’s Kabukicho district. The victims, ranging in age from their 20s to their 50s, were walking along the street when they were assaulted by a group of roughly 10 armed men. One victim suffered serious injuries after being struck in the head with a club-like object, though his injuries were not life-threatening. The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department‘s Shinjuku Police Station is investigating the case as attempted murder and searching for the suspects, who fled the scene.
“The attack took place near the intersection of Kuyakusho-dori and Hanamichi-dori,” said a reporter covering social affairs nationwide. “According to police, the attackers suddenly appeared in several vehicles before launching the assault. They punched and kicked the victims, and some reportedly used club-like weapons. The entire incident lasted only a few minutes, and the attackers quickly got back into their vehicles and fled.”
Although the attack occurred shortly before 4 a.m., there were numerous witnesses because it happened in the heart of one of Tokyo’s busiest entertainment districts. Several witnesses said the victims themselves appeared completely bewildered by what was happening.
One woman who works in the nightlife industry and witnessed the assault recalled:
“Several men rushed at the group walking down the street, shouting things like ‘Hey!’ and ‘Get over here!’ in intimidating voices. Then the fighting suddenly started. The victims seemed completely caught off guard and were barely able to defend themselves. They were just being beaten, and some were bleeding from the head. It all happened so fast that at first I couldn’t even understand what was going on.”
Another male witness described the frightening scene:
“I couldn’t believe something like that was actually happening. A man suddenly appeared carrying what looked like a metal bat or some kind of club and started swinging it toward people’s heads while shouting aggressively. It felt like something out of a movie or TV drama.
It happened so suddenly that other pedestrians nearby probably had no idea what was going on either. The victims were shouting things like, ‘What are you doing?!’ but they were getting completely beaten up. Even after they fell to the ground, several attackers continued kicking them without mercy.”
Gang Members’ Lending and Borrowing of Money Initiated
According to a source with ties to organized crime, the attack stemmed from a dispute between rival gang members.
“This incident involved members from three different groups. It started when a member of Gang A borrowed money from a member of Gang B. When the repayment deadline passed and the money still hadn’t been returned, about 15 members of Gang B went to demand repayment from Gang A. That’s apparently what led to the attack. Members of Gang C, who had become involved in an effort to mediate between A and B, were also caught up in the violence,” the source said.
Why did a simple debt dispute escalate into such a violent confrontation?
“The answer is straightforward: the borrower kept failing to repay the money. Gang A and Gang B belong to different affiliated organizations, so if one side drags its feet on repayment, conflict is almost inevitable. If they belonged to the same parent organization, it probably wouldn’t have escalated this far. Gang B didn’t want to be seen as a group that lends money and can’t collect it, so the attack became a way of demonstrating its strength,” the source explained.
According to the source, three members of Gang C and one member of Gang A were attacked. One of the Gang C members suffered injuries severe enough to require treatment in an intensive care unit.
The source also claimed that the dispute has since been settled internally.
“One person connected to Gang B was suspended, while another was expelled from the organization. Gang B also reportedly paid around ¥2 million to Groups A and C. I don’t think the conflict will escalate any further, but there is still a sense of tension in the air,” the source said.
Violent incidents involving organized crime groups occur periodically in Kabukicho. However, attacks carried out on a public street are relatively rare. For ordinary bystanders who happened to witness the assault, the experience must have been terrifying. Whatever the dispute over money may have been, violence can never be justified as a means of resolving it.
