Sentenced on July 15. Suspect face down in the back seat of the convoy all the time.

“Would you like to go to karaoke with me?”

The suspect must have been the type of girl they liked. The men approached a woman they saw at a restaurant in Tokyo. The crime took place in a private room of a karaoke bar they entered shortly afterward.

By July 14, the Shibuya Police Department arrested two men, including Ivanov Nikolai, 41, a Russian national living in Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture, on suspicion of non-consensual sexual intercourse and robbery. Ivanov, a former makuuchi (top-ranked) sumo wrestler who went by the name of “Amuru,” is alleged to have sexually assaulted a woman in her thirties, A. “The alleged incident took place in April,” the police report said.

The alleged incident occurred between 10:00 and 11:00 p.m. on April 5. Ivanov and a friend, an Uzbek male in his 30s, were eating at a restaurant in Tokyo when Ivanov saw Ms. A in the restaurant and invited her to sing karaoke, probably to get her to lower her guard. The men allegedly searched for Ivanov’s name on the Internet, showed him pictures of himself in action, and told him that he was a real ex-wrestler.

The men and Ms. A went to a karaoke bar in Shibuya Ward. Immediately after entering the private room, the Ivanov suspects pushed Ms. A down and sexually assaulted her. They also robbed Ms. A of 40,000 yen in cash from her purse and fled. Ms. A immediately reported the assault to a nearby police box, and the police launched an investigation. The police have not yet revealed whether the suspects are guilty or not,” said a reporter from a national newspaper’s society department.

A huge man weighing nearly 130 kg

Ivanov’s highest rank during his career was maegashira maegashira fiveshot. He was named “Amuro” after the Amur River, which flows through his hometown in eastern Russia. Ivanov was arrested on suspicion of non-consensual sexual intercourse, but his reputation during his active career was surprising.

Ivanov was a boxer in Russia, but he took up sumo at the suggestion of his sister’s husband, a Japanese man. When he first came to Japan, he had a hard time eating Japanese food such as rice and sashimi. Due to repeated injuries, she bounced back and forth between the makushita and sandan ranks.

However, Amuro refused to give up, saying, “I want to please my family in Russia,” and was promoted to juryo in January 2012, 57 places after his first bout in the ring, the second slowest promotion for a foreign rikishi at the time. He excelled at thrusting and pushing sumo, taking advantage of his height of over 190 cm and weight of nearly 130 kg. He had a good reputation for his enthusiasm for training. He married a Russian woman last fall, as I recall, and everyone involved was surprised to hear the news of his arrest.

Former Kanagawa Prefectural Police detective and crime journalist Taihei Ogawa explains.

If the charges are true, he probably invited the woman to a karaoke bar with the intention of sexually assaulting her from the start. If the charges are true, he must have invited the woman to a karaoke bar with the intention of sexually assaulting her from the start. It was not a sudden trouble caused by drunkenness while playing karaoke, but a premeditated crime.

No matter how high his reputation may have been during his active career, using photos from his days as a rikishi to seduce women would ruin his past accomplishments. If he used his overwhelming power and size as a former makuuchi wrestler to humiliate a woman, it would be an extremely malicious act.

Ivanov is said to have been moving from job to job after retiring from active sumo after the May 2006 tournament.

He did not appear before the press at the time of his arrest.
The highest rank he held during his active career was Maegashira Maegashira 5.
He is said to have pushed a woman down immediately after entering a private room at a karaoke bar.
The suspect’s confession or denial has not been made public.
