<p>The woman was found in a drastically altered state just two days after visiting the hospital— a tragic outcome following what appears to have been brutal abuse.</p>
<p>On July 11, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s First Investigation Division arrested 59-year-old Keisuke Saito—of no fixed address or known occupation—on suspicion of assaulting his 54-year-old girlfriend, Ms. S. According to police, Ms. S sustained multiple broken ribs and bruises to her face, abdomen, and other parts of her body. A few days after the alleged assault, she was confirmed dead.</p>
<p><strong>&#8220;The charges state that between February 11 and 12 of this year, Saito allegedly assaulted Ms. S in locations across Tokyo and Chiba Prefecture. On the evening of the 12th, Ms. S complained of pain in her side and visited a hospital in Chiba. She reportedly told the doctor, ‘I hit my back during a struggle with Saito.’ Shockingly, Saito was the one who accompanied her to the hospital.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Two days later, on the afternoon of the 14th, Ms. S was found in a severely deteriorated state. The building manager discovered her collapsed and unconscious in the bathroom of her apartment. She was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead that same day. Investigators believe she may have suffered a head injury as well.
