The suspect, who allegedly assaulted his girlfriend violently, was sent to prosecutors on July 13.

The woman was found in a drastically altered state just two days after visiting the hospital— a tragic outcome following what appears to have been brutal abuse.

On July 11, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s First Investigation Division arrested 59-year-old Keisuke Saito—of no fixed address or known occupation—on suspicion of assaulting his 54-year-old girlfriend, Ms. S. According to police, Ms. S sustained multiple broken ribs and bruises to her face, abdomen, and other parts of her body. A few days after the alleged assault, she was confirmed dead.

“The charges state that between February 11 and 12 of this year, Saito allegedly assaulted Ms. S in locations across Tokyo and Chiba Prefecture. On the evening of the 12th, Ms. S complained of pain in her side and visited a hospital in Chiba. She reportedly told the doctor, ‘I hit my back during a struggle with Saito.’ Shockingly, Saito was the one who accompanied her to the hospital.

Two days later, on the afternoon of the 14th, Ms. S was found in a severely deteriorated state. The building manager discovered her collapsed and unconscious in the bathroom of her apartment. She was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead that same day. Investigators believe she may have suffered a head injury as well. Multiple bruises were found across her body, and the cause of death was determined to be traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage,” said a reporter from a national newspaper’s social affairs section.

It’s completely unfounded

Saito and Ms. S were reportedly together from the early hours of February 12 through the morning of the 13th, staying at multiple hotels. Based on footage from several security cameras, police concluded that no one but Saito could have inflicted the injuries on Ms. S. It was also revealed that Ms. S had previously confided in acquaintances, saying she had been subjected to violence by Saito. Despite this, Saito is said to have told investigators:

“It’s completely unfounded.”

On July 13, during his transfer to prosecutors, Saito glared at magazine photographers and the press. Former Kanagawa Prefectural Police detective and crime journalist Taihei Ogawa offered this analysis:

“If the allegations are true, Saito accompanying the victim to the hospital was not out of kindness. It was likely to prevent her from telling the truth to the doctor. When an abuser is present, the victim may fear retaliation if they speak honestly.

Going forward, testimony from the doctor and digital evidence—such as LINE messages or emails where she discussed the abuse—will become crucial to the investigation.

If you’re suffering violence from a partner, do not tolerate it. The situation won’t get better on its own. Please consult the police or local authorities immediately and seek proper support.”

Police are continuing to investigate the details of the conflict between Saito and Ms. S.

During questioning, the suspect denied the allegations, stating, “It’s completely unfounded.”
The woman he was dating had reportedly confided in acquaintances about experiencing violence in the past.
The suspect had accompanied her to the hospital.
The woman is believed to have died from traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage.
