Certain Change in the Public Duties of Princess Kako
On November 1st, a cloudy day in the metropolitan area, Princess Kako (29), the second daughter of the Akishino family, was seen in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture, wearing a refreshing blue dress that seemed to blow away the rain clouds.
“She attended the ‘National Urban Greening Festival.’ There was also a scene where Princess Kako planted a cherry sapling with local middle school students,” said a reporter from a major media outlet covering the Imperial Household.
Just three days earlier, Princess Kako had visited Kanazawa City in Ishikawa Prefecture, where she met with Wajima lacquer artisans whose workshops had been damaged by earthquakes and heavy rain. According to royal journalists, there has been a certain change in her recent public duties.
“She has always shown strong interest in welfare, but it seems her willingness to actively reach out to people who are suffering, such as visiting areas near disaster sites, has become even stronger. I have heard that Princess Kako personally requested a visit to Ishikawa,” said a royal journalist.
Royal commentator Shinji Yamashita added:
“During the visit, she was wearing Wajima lacquer accessories. This was likely to show her support for the artisans and raise awareness of the affected areas. Princess Kako is skilled in such thoughtful promotion, considering the attention she attracts.”
Princess Kako is exploring a new style of public duty as part of the active Imperial Family. The Wajima lacquer accessories she wore were reportedly sold out for a time.
