Schumacher” is the first Japanese comedian to achieve this feat. Yuya Gomi (left) and Ryutaro Nakamura revealed the behind-the-scenes story.

Two Japanese comedians achieved a remarkable feat on “America’s Got Talent,” a popular American audition program in which performers from all over the world compete to win the 150 million yen prize. The classmate duo “Schumacher,” consisting of Yuya Gomi (37) and Ryutaro Nakamura (37), won the “Golden Buzzer,” the judges’ special award. It was the first time in the history of Japanese comedians to accomplish this feat.

Yasumura (43), who is also a member of Anyhow, and their classmate “Chocolate Planet” also participated in the preliminary round of “Got Talent Season 19,” but they received a higher rating than them. By winning the Golden Buzzer, “Schumacher” jumped ahead to the next stage. With the Golden Buzzer, “Schumacher” has jumped ahead to the next stage and is now in line to be crowned the “World’s Greatest Entertainer. When we asked them about their joy at this accomplishment, they revealed a surprising backstory.

Nakamura: I entered the competition thinking it was my last chance, so it is still just a passing phase, but I am relieved to have made it.

Gomi: That program is said to be very strict with comedians, and even if you pass the qualifying round, it is sometimes not aired. So I entered the competition with the goal of first getting on the air. But I was more surprised than happy to see the result.

Nakamura:I think this is a common understanding between the two of us. When we heard from the producer just before the show that Yasumura-san and “Chokopura” were also competing from Japan, we were in despair. I thought, “We have come this far, but in the end, “Chokopura” is going to take all the attention” (laughs).

Gomi: Really. So when the “golden buzzer” sounded, I was most happy that the buzz would somehow come to us.

At the “Got Talent” stage, he had the audience on their feet with his animal imitation tights. He performed a dog, then a zebra, then a unicorn, then a giraffe. When Nakamura completed the giraffe by nuzzling his face into Gomi’s buttocks, the audience erupted in cheers. Nakamura explains the circumstances leading up to his participation in the competition.

After returning to Japan, he has been sought out for television and other media. He is aiming for a breakthrough as a “reimported” comedian, which is rare for a comedian.

Nakamura:There is a comedian who is a good friend of mine, “Yumbo Dump” and USP (36), who specializes in a non-verbal style of comedy and had already challenged “Got Talent”. If they could do it, I thought we could do it, too, so we set our sights on competing in Got Talent.

Gomi: However, since we were overseas, we did not know how to enter the competition, so we consulted with WSP a lot.

Nakamura:It seems that USP received the offer after we created a buzz on SNS. So we decided to upload new material to TikTok every day from last summer and posted it. Then one of our videos got a lot of buzz, and we really got an offer.

Gomi: But when I first got the offer, I was skeptical because I don’t usually get messages from overseas. I was skeptical. I asked the latest interactive AI, “Claude AI,” and it said, “That could be a scam,” so at first I wondered if I should reply (laughs). (Laughs.) But it was a chance, so I took a chance and replied, and it was definitely genuine, so things went a lot smoother from there.

Nakamura:To be honest, I had my doubts until I got on stage, so I was really happy that we were able to successfully perform our material and leave the results behind. This was really the only way left for us. Although we did not achieve any results in Japan, we may be able to become a new role model for comedians.

Finally, I asked him about his ambitions for the future.

Gomi: First of all, I would like to win the “Got Talent” competition.

Nakamura: I am the same way. Also, if we are doing non-speaking material, we can’t really show our personalities, so I would like to get to know them better by appearing on the …… talk show.

Gomi:Indeed, we both like to talk, so we would like to take this opportunity to go around variety shows. But since we are both married, we will do anything as long as it is not a “female-related” or “injury-free” project (laughs).

Nakamura: “We are already ready to sell.

Will he be able to become a new role model who achieves results overseas and then “reimports” them to Japan? We look forward to seeing his future activities.

In the paid version of “FRIDAY GOLD,” the two “Schumachers” talk in depth about their frustrations in “M-1” and “King of Conte,” the birth of their “non-speaking” style, and more.
