Yuko Wakabayashi Determined Coverage with Sanja Po Armband in Tokyo Gubernatorial Election
The Tokyo gubernatorial election ended with a landslide victory for the incumbent Governor Yuriko Koike (71). Throughout the election period, candidates campaigned in various locations.
In late June, just after noon, Renho walked through the Palm shopping street in Musashikoyama, Shinagawa Ward, known for its prominent arcade, waving to shop owners and shoppers. Among the crowd of photographers and reporters following her, there was a female journalist in a black suit, holding a microphone.
TBS announcer Yuko Wakabayashi, aged 28.
“In the midst of the press, there was a woman standing out with a conspicuous armband, and upon closer inspection, it turned out to be Announcer Yuko Wakabayashi. It seemed she was reporting for ‘Sunday Japon,’ focusing solely on Renho, following her every step.” (local shop representative)
Wakabayashi, who joined TBS in 2019, has been active primarily in morning news programs such as an assistant on ‘Gutto Luck!’ and a sub-caster on ‘Hayadoki!’ Her career highlights include becoming the main caster for the Sunday edition of ‘N Sta’ since 2021. On this particular day, she was engaged in the customary ‘Sunday Japon’ feature of on-the-spot coverage as a reporter.
“I chased after Renho as she got into her car, calling out to her earnestly from behind. Even as the car drove away, Renho waved from the window, and I bowed deeply in response. It seemed like a thorough and respectful interview.” (Witnessing shopper)
Unfortunately, during the surprise interview, it seems we couldn’t hear Renho’s voice live. Still, people in the shopping street appreciated her hard work. What kind of ‘surprise’ will she show next time?
