Asa Ramen” is thriving.
While the mere mention of the word may make some people sick to their stomachs, there are regions in Japan, such as Fukushima and Shizuoka prefectures, where the custom of eating ramen for breakfast has taken root. It is said that the “morning ramen culture” was born because many people engaged in early morning physical labor, such as working in the fields or fishing, to energize them.
But the kicker that started the epidemic in urban areas was the “COVID-19 crisis.” Since 2008, ramen stores, which had found it difficult to open after 8:00 p.m. due to repeated declarations of a state of emergency and the issuance of measures to prevent the spread of the disease, decided to open early in the morning as a way to break the deadlock. As a result, many stores were successful, and even now that Corona has begun to calm down, the number of stores that continue to do so and the number of stores that imitate them have increased. Many of them offer special ramen only during the morning hours, and the general trend is to offer ramen that tastes lighter and is priced slightly lower than the regular menu.
Then, who are the customers? This varies greatly depending on the location. Some businesspeople are looking for a quick energy boost before work in the area near the office, while Ebisu’s Tsunagi, located near the downtown area, attracts people after a night of work to “finish off” their drinks. At Marue Chuka Soba, located near a residential area in Sugamo, many mothers rush in after dropping off their children at school.
Morning ramen” continues to expand, supported by a wide variety of demand. It is likely that this trend will continue for some time to come.
