Interview with Natsuki Deguchi, who stars with Nana Mori in the drama “For the first time in my life, I got angry at the maiko’s acting instruction.
Portraits of the 7 energetic groups that will enliven Japan in 2023
Natsuki Deguchi, 21, is one of the hottest young actresses today. However, when she was first scouted, she had no interest in the entertainment industry.
She said, “‘Come and play! I went to the office several times because he enthusiastically invited me to come visit him. It was just small talk, but I remember I could talk without being nervous. After that, the office staff even came to the school to try to persuade me to come, and I was so impressed by their enthusiasm that I went to ……. I decided to give it a try.”
She began her performing career in ’18, starting with commercials and modeling work. Last year, she made her debut as an actress in the latest film in the “Galileo” series, “Silence on Parade,” starring Masaharu Fukuyama.
I’ve never been good at memorizing lines. I used to memorize them by writing them on a piece of paper. By the time I appeared in “Silence on Parade,” I had changed to saying the lines out loud over and over again, and I was able to remember them a little faster. In the past year or two, I’ve been getting more acting jobs, and I think I’ve gotten a little more comfortable with acting. Recently, acting has become more enjoyable.”
In “Silence on Parade,” she played the role of Natsumi, the daughter of a restaurant owner who has lost her older sister but tries her best to act cheerful.
Natsumi is a bright and lively girl. I made a conscious effort to use my voice and devise my own way of acting. The director was very enthusiastic in guiding me, and I worked very hard to respond to his instructions.
Natsumi will play the lead role in “Maiko-sanchi no Makanai-san,” a drama series directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda that will be available on Netflix from January 12, 2012. She plays Sumire, a maiko who is said to be a once-in-a-century talent. She recalls the audition that won her the lead role: “I had seen Kore-eda’s films.
I had seen Kore-eda’s films, but I went to the audition without knowing the director’s face. I had seen his films, but I didn’t know what he looked like when I went to the audition. I thought I saw someone I didn’t know taking pictures next to me at the audition, but it was Kore-eda. When I entered the room for the second audition, Kore-eda said to me, ‘I’d like to decide on Deguchi-san. I was surprised to hear that before the manager did.
The rehearsals for the role of Maiko were very difficult, he said.
Sumire is a character who improves through extraordinary effort. I started training a year before the shooting and did ikebana (flower arrangement) and tsuzumi (hand drum), but the hardest part was practicing the “dance. They strictly instructed me on every movement from the top of my head to the tips of my toes. Every time I went to practice, I felt like running away because of the pain, and they pointed it out to me. I had never been so angry in my life. I realized that I was not good enough before I was not good enough, and I changed my attitude to never lose. On the day of the “Mai” shoot, the master came to the set and when our eyes met after the shoot, he smiled at me for the first time. It may not have meant anything profound, but it was a great relief.
Although she struggles with her acting and training every day, in her private life she shows a side of a girl appropriate for her age.
I became friends with Nana Mori when we performed together in Maiko-san’s Makanaisan. We both like spicy food, and it was fun to go out to eat on days when we weren’t filming.”
One of her work goals for this year is to “get used to acting. She is always giving her all to the work in front of her, and we can expect great things from her.
Natsuki Deguchi / Born in 2001 in China. She became an exclusive model for “Seventeen” in 2006. After graduating from “Seventeen,” she became an exclusive model for “non-no” in 2010. She has also been expanding her activities as an actress, and since her first appearance in a TV drama in 1919, she has appeared in a number of high-profile films. In 2010, she attracted much attention for her excellent performance as the heroine in the movie “Silence on Parade,” and will play the lead role with Nana Mori in “Maiko-san-chi no Makanaisan,” which will be released on Netfilx on January 12, 2010.
