The original members of C-C-B reunited at the wedding of Hideki Watanabe (center) six months after the breakup.

It was announced on the official website that Koji Kasa, drummer and vocalist of C-C-B, passed away on December 14 at the age of 60. Kasa had been hospitalized since July for treatment of diabetes, a chronic illness, and passed away on December 14 due to a stroke.

C-C-B was formed in 1982 as “Coconut Boys” under the concept of “Japanese Beach Boys. Initially, they had several hits with commercial songs, and their abilities were recognized when they sang the theme song “Romantic ga unstoppable” (“Romantic”) for the January 1985 TV drama “Every Time We Miss You” (TBS). Kasa was chosen by the music producer as the main vocalist because he was in charge of drums and had a clear, high tone voice. He became popular for his eccentric pink hair and his drum performance, in which he twirled the sticks around.

The band’s name was changed to “C-C-B” after “Romantic” became a big hit, and the band won the Gold Prize at the 27th Japan Record Awards that year. Although C-C-B has a strong image of being a one-hit wonder, they had a steady stream of hits until they announced their breakup in 1989. The photo at the beginning of this article was taken in April 1990, six months after the breakup, when the original members gathered for the wedding of Hideki Watanabe (then 30), a member of the band. At that time, 400 guests including Demon Kogure and Kiyotaka Sugiyama gathered at the venue, and many entertainment media paid attention to the reunion of the original C-C-B members. The event proved that C-C-B’s popularity has not waned even after its dissolution. In the photo, Kasa is showing her best smile.

I wasn’t confident.”

In an interview with “Nikkan Sports” in 2016, she said, “I don’t know why I’m so successful.

I didn’t know why I was selling so well, and I wasn’t confident in my abilities as a drummer.”

He added, “I didn’t play around at night at all just because I was selling well. I thought, ‘Is it okay to go out at night? I stayed home all the time, so I don’t remember having any fun.

I was so confused,” she recalls.

Mr. Kasa is a very sensitive person, and he felt so much pressure from being chosen as the vocalist for “Romantic” that he suffered from insomnia. I think she dared to make her hair pink and her drum performances show off her flamboyance in order to overcome such a self-doubt.

Kasa had suffered from asthma since childhood and diabetes for many years, but in 1999 he moved to his hometown in Minamiaso Village, Kumamoto Prefecture, where his family lived, and steadily made radio appearances and live performances, leading a fulfilling life. Now, we just want to pray for his soul rest in peace.
