Actress Yoko Shimada passed away.

She had been battling with the disease for about three years and was said to have suffered from multiple organ failure due to colon cancer. She was a well-known actress who was active not only in Japan but also abroad.

In October 1970, she made her drama debut in “Osana Tsuma” (Tokyo 12 Channel, now TV Tokyo). Her performance in “Sequel to “Hyokuten” (TBS),” which aired from January of the following year, recorded the highest viewer rating of 42.7% and brought her to the attention of the public as an actress.

The turning point for her was the 1980 NBC drama “Shogun SHOGUN. For this film, Ms. Shimada won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a TV Series Drama. She became well known as an international actress,” said a source in the entertainment industry.

On the other hand, she has always been a controversial actress, and in 1988 she had an affair with rock singer and actor Yuya Uchida, with whom she co-starred in the movie “Labyrinth in the Garden of Flowers.” Uchida filed for divorce, but his wife, Kirin Kiki, filed a lawsuit to have the divorce annulled.

The April 22, 1988 issue of “FRIDAY” caught Shimada and Uchida on a “secret trip to Hawaii.”

It was late in the evening when Ms. Shimada and Mr. Uchida disembarked from a passenger plane arriving at Honolulu Airport. The limousine drove them into an ultra-luxury hotel.

The next morning, after breakfast at the hotel, they went to a shopping mall to buy perfume and T-shirts. In the afternoon, Shimada and Uchida changed into swimsuits at a private beach and played with each other. The actress and rock singer enjoyed their four-day vacation in Hawaii.

“Ms. Shimada is a single-minded person,” said Uchida. She is devoted to the man she loves. In 1994, she married a lighting technician at a TV station who had a wife and child.

Shimada went her own way and always attracted the public’s attention. Her untimely death has been regretted not only in the entertainment world.

She was also driving in Japan with an expired international driver’s license. Mr. Shimada showing the international driver’s license in question to a reporter for this magazine, taken in July 1997 (some of the images have been edited).
