Last July, a partially decomposed body of a woman was found in the bathtub of a house in Takatsuki City, Osaka Prefecture. The woman was completely naked, with half of her face submerged in water. Both of her wrists were bound with a bandage.

The woman was Naoko Takai, then 54, who worked for a city bank group company. Her colleagues and relatives became suspicious that Ms. Takai, who had a serious attitude toward her work, had gone AWOL, and visited her home and found her body. Although Mr. Takai was an asset, he was single and lived alone. The police are now investigating the death as a result of someone drowning him, since his arms were restrained.

However, there were many puzzling aspects. There were no signs of a struggle in the room, and no bank books, wallets, cash cards, or personal seals were stolen. An envelope containing approximately 700,000 yen, which was left on the table, was also left untouched. The TV and bathroom light had been left on. It is believed that the murderer may have faked Ms. Takai’s sudden death.

It is not my handwriting.

On July 20 of this year, one year after the incident, things took a turn for the worse. A year after the incident, a 28-year-old man who had adopted Ms. Takai was arrested on suspicion of forging and using a private sealed document.

The suspect, Butei Takai (formerly known as Matsuda), is a self-proclaimed consultant from Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Butei is suspected of forging an adoption notice with Takai, which he submitted to the Takatsuki City Office in February of last year.

The suspect Butei has a wife. When a married person adopts a child, the Civil Code requires the consent of the spouse. After conducting a handwriting analysis, the Osaka Prefectural Police determined that Rin suspect entered the names of his wife and father without permission. Both the wife and father testified to the police investigation, saying, ‘It is not my handwriting. Butei stated that he ‘cannot easily answer the truth of the matter.

Butei has a colorful background. After graduating from Kwansei Gakuin University in March 2004, he joined a major consulting firm in Tokyo, and in November 2006, he moved to a foreign-affiliated insurance company, where he enjoyed a good life.

He lived in a luxury tower apartment in Tokyo and drove a black Lamborghini. He was dressed in brand-name clothes and wristwatches, and was drinking at clubs in Azabu and Roppongi. He lavishly gave luxury brand goods as gifts to female staff members at his restaurants.

Butei and Takai first became acquainted several years ago. Butei adopted Ms. Takai, who was a client of the foreign-affiliated insurance company where he worked. Shortly after, Mr. Takai was insured for a large sum of money.

Mr. Takai took out life insurance policies with two companies. One of those companies was the insurance company where Butei was employed. The total amount of insurance coverage amounted to 150 million yen. The beneficiary was Butei. Mr. Takai’s inheritance, amounting to tens of millions of yen, was also to be received. It is possible that his intention to become the adopted son of Mr. Takai, who was 27 years older than him at the time, was to receive the huge insurance money and inheritance.

But is the suspect related to Ms. Takai’s death? The police are carefully investigating.
