Suddenly there was White Smoke…Sequence of On-Scene Photographs of Shooting of Former Prime Minister Abe
Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot at around 11:30 a.m. on July 8 while giving a speech in support of the House of Councillors election in Nara City. The suspect, Tetsuya Yamagami, 41, a resident of Nara Prefecture, committed the murder. The scene of the tragedy, which took place in front of a large audience, was chaotic.
Former Prime Minister Abe, who was shot, went into cardiopulmonary arrest and was rushed to the hospital of Nara Medical University. Yamakami, on the other hand, showed no signs of fleeing and was seized while standing at the scene. The suspect was arrested while he was standing there.
Yamakami reportedly told interrogators, “I have no grudge against (former Prime Minister Abe’s) political beliefs.”

Five minutes into the speech, the suspect Yamakami approached former Prime Minister Abe from behind him diagonally on the left side .
At approximately 11:31, the suspect pointed a shotgun at Prime Minister Abe and pulled the trigger. At the same time as the shot was fired, white smoke rose from the gun.

A second shot rang out, and Prime Minister Abe fell to the ground. At first he was conscious, but then he went into cardiopulmonary arrest. He had a wound and bleeding on the right side of his neck and subcutaneous bleeding in his left chest. He then arrived at the hospital around 12:20 pm. Despite the best efforts of medical treatment, he reportedly died shortly after 6:00 p.m. on August 8.
Such an incident is absolutely unacceptable. A full investigation should be done.
