Russian Medvedeva’s “Avant-garde Pose Posting” Oozes Meaningfulness
Russian female figure skater Evgenia Medvedeva, a silver medalist at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, who made headlines worldwide after posting an anti-war message on her Instagram account. She has now released a photo of herself in a “mysterious pose in a white tank top” that has caused a stir.
Medvedeva released two photos. She is wearing a white tank top and shorts, with white paint on her arms and neck. Medvedeva’s eyelids are painted white, and in both photos she appears to have her eyes closed.
In the first photo, Medvedeva is squatting, and in the second, she is on one knee, legs spread apart, arms clasped and arms raised, which is somewhat odd. But at the same time, it is mysterious.
Medvedeva, born in Moscow, Russia in 1999, father Armenian, mother Russian, started figure skating when she was around 3 years old and won two consecutive World Championships in 2016 and 2017. She reigned as the undefeated absolute queen, but ended up with a silver medal at the PyeongChang Olympics as the comet-like Alina Zagitova continued her rapid rise.
Medvedeva is also known for her love of Japanese anime and Ghibli movies. In particular, she is a big fan of “Sailor Moon,” and performed in a Sailor Moon costume at the 2016 Dream on Ice.
In the midst of all this, Medvedeva posted a text on her Instagram that smacked of protest against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which caused a worldwide sensation. Medvedeva posted this black image using the Stories function on Instagram. The black screen was accompanied by the message, “Like a bad dream, I hope it all ends as soon as possible. While this drew praise from around the world, some people were concerned about whether they were in danger.
Now, what exactly is the pose of the photo posted this time? I sense a strong message. Perhaps due to domestic criticism, Medvedeva has recently stopped speaking out about the war. What she is trying to appeal through this pose may be her thoughts on peace….
In any case, we can only hope that the day will come soon when we can hear her true thoughts on peace from her own mouth.
