Their first photo together

One evening in early October, in one of Tokyo’s most exclusive neighborhoods, filled with skyscrapers and luxury high-rise condominiums, a particularly eye-catching couple was spotted walking through the streets. Many celebrities call this area home.

The man wore black-framed glasses, a denim jacket, and jeans. The woman wore a black hoodie and a cap pulled low over her face. As a pleasant autumn breeze blew, the two walked hand in hand, affectionately taking their dog for a stroll. They were former KAT-TUN member Kazuya Kamenashi (40) and actress Minami Tanaka (39), now husband and wife.

The couple stunned the nation when they announced their marriage and the pregnancy of their first child this June. Yet in the nearly three years since their romance first came to light on New Year’s Day 2024, the media had never captured a definitive photograph of them together. This long-awaited first photo was all the more striking to fans and entertainment reporters, with local residents who witnessed the scene saying in unison:

“I was surprised to see that they really were married.”

Despite being a high-profile couple made up of two hugely popular celebrities, how had they managed to stay out of sight for so long and evade the cameras? Behind it all was an extraordinary level of vigilance that even industry insiders found impressive.

“Whenever they met, it was usually at one of their homes or in a completely private space. They were extremely careful. They never went on dates at conspicuous places like restaurants, and they never posted anything on social media that might hint at their relationship.” (Sports newspaper reporter)

They admitted their relationship, but never got photographed together

A Nippon TV insider revealed another surprising detail about the couple:

“Kamenashi appears on ‘Going! Sports&News’ at 11 p.m. on weekends. While they were dating, a car from Tanaka’s agency would often come to pick him up at Nippon TV’s Shiodome headquarters. Tanaka would be hiding in the back seat, and Kamenashi would get in. The two would then leave the television station together. It seems they were meeting under extremely tight security.”

Their extraordinary secrecy even led some media outlets to report rumors of a breakup in the fall of 2025. At the time, the two reportedly confided in close acquaintances:

“We’re not broken up, but we’re troubled by articles that don’t reflect the truth.”

Even so, they never resorted to careless behavior that might expose them to public scrutiny. Behind this restraint, it seems, was Kamenashi’s consideration for his fans.

“When Kamenashi first announced their relationship, he was still a member of KAT-TUN. His professionalism meant that even if he acknowledged the relationship, he was determined not to be photographed together with Tanaka. She understood his feelings and was equally thorough about keeping any signs of their relationship out of sight. That’s probably why their marriage announcement drew relatively little backlash, which is unusual for an idol.” (Women’s magazine reporter)

After KAT-TUN disbanded and he left his agency, Kamenashi had finally fulfilled his obligations to his fans. Meanwhile, Tanaka had established herself as an actress through performances that resonated with audiences. Perhaps it was precisely because they had maintained such a strong sense of professionalism, quietly nurturing their love until they married, that they were finally able to appear together so openly, walking hand in hand.
