“Ordinary? Not a chance!”

Mayu Matsuoka (31) is on a roll. The drama series “Downtime,” in which she stars and which began streaming on Netflix in September, has long held the No. 1 spot on the “Today’s Top 10 Series (Japan)” chart. Online, there’s no end to the praise for her exceptional acting skills.

“Matsuoka has starred in many productions over the years, and each one has been a solid hit. But until now, I had the impression that her support came mostly from connoisseur-type fans. Now, however, it seems she has definitively emerged as a top mainstream actress,” said a TV magazine editor.

Matsuoka has a long acting career. She debuted at age 10 and shot to fame at 18 for her role as a quirky idol in the NHK morning drama *Amachan*. Since then, she has continued to deliver strong performances in equally quirky roles, establishing a strong presence in the industry.

“I hate to say it, but Matsuoka wasn’t what you’d call a ‘looks-first’ actress. Among her peers—including Kasumi Arimura, Tao Tsuchiya, and Haruna Kawaguchi—there were many rivals who combined good looks with acting talent. Amid that competition, Matsuoka gained popularity through her unique flair for playing introverted characters, sharp-tongued characters, and airheaded roles—roles that only she could pull off.Because she wasn’t overly beautiful, her performances felt authentic, and many people found her relatable,” said an entertainment editor at a women’s magazine.

In other words, Matsuoka’s strength lay not only in her acting skills but also in her ordinariness and approachability—qualities lacking in actors with looks that are far removed from those of the average person.Perhaps it’s because viewers feel a certain kinship with her, making it easy to see themselves in the characters she plays… or something along those lines. However, as I continued my research on Matsuoka, it became clear that the entertainment industry is not such a simple world.

In *Downtime*, Matsuoka plays a genius plastic surgeon who detests cosmetic surgeons. As a result, her character is always makeup-free, with messy hair, and doesn’t pay much attention to her appearance.Indeed, given that Matsuoka’s appeal lies in her “ordinary” look, this disheveled appearance feels incredibly natural and adds to the story’s credibility. You could certainly say she’s the perfect fit for the role. But when it comes to the real Matsuoka…

“To call her ‘ordinary’ is an absolute exaggeration! When you actually meet her, you’re struck by her radiant clarity. Her skin is so pale and beautiful it seems almost translucent, and it glows. She’s far more captivating than someone who’s merely well-proportioned. Even among celebrities, I’ve rarely seen anyone with that level of radiant clarity.

In *Downtime*, she plays a character with messy hair, yet she still exudes a sense of cleanliness that never feels off-putting. I think that’s due to her innate radiance. The close-up of her face at the very end was particularly breathtaking.“Her skin’s beauty really stands out, but I’m convinced that’s absolutely not retouched—it’s completely natural,” (Interview Writer)

The contrast between her innocence and her intensity…

When it comes to Matsuoka, the story goes that she tagged along to her younger sister’s audition after her sister was scouted, and when asked, “So, do you want to give it a try too, big sis?” she entered the entertainment industry thanks to her sister’s “spillover” success. In fact, she herself boasts constantly, saying, “Unlike me, my sister is cute.”

“Even during the interview, she talked nothing but about her younger sister. She said that if it weren’t for her sister, she wouldn’t have made it into show business, so she’s incredibly grateful. When asked about her favorite food, she spoke passionately about how ‘the cookies my sister bakes are seriously the best in the world.’ I could tell she truly adores her sister and has absolutely no insecurities about her.”

That said, she’s clearly cute herself, and above all, there’s that translucent quality to her skin. That’s actually something that’s hard to achieve through plastic surgery. I think that’s why so many directors and producers took notice of her. Seeing Ms. Matsuoka in person really drove it home to me that the entertainment industry isn’t as forgiving as to let you get by on just being ordinary or approachable (laughs).” (Ibid.)

So, to stand out from the crowd, you need talent—and one more thing: a unique asset that others don’t have. Takahiko Kageyama, a professor at Doshisha Women’s College of Liberal Arts and a media critic, describes Matsuoka’s appeal as follows.

“I wasn’t really in the mood to watch *Downtime* before I started, but once I began, I got completely hooked.I’ve always been a big fan of Mayu Matsuoka—her performances in every project have been wonderful—but she was certainly the kind of actress who appealed more to connoisseurs. I find it fascinating that, surprisingly, she was able to solidify her status on Netflix, a platform watched by so many people.”

Matsuoka’s appeal lies in her down-to-earth, pure charm, but in *Downtime*, she also displayed a certain “intensity.”

“In scenes where she stands her ground against Risa Nakamura and Hiromi Nagasaku, she played the part so naturally—it didn’t feel forced at all.In stark contrast, the scene where she sheds tears over her mother’s death and calls out ‘Mama’ like a child was equally natural. I really felt the breadth of her acting range. She’s an actress with a baby face who retains a certain pure, childlike quality. On the other hand, the contrast—the fact that she can also deliver such intense performances—is likely what’s driving her acclaim this time around.

Come to think of it, Sairi Ito (32)—who is close friends with Matsuoka and co-hosts a radio show with her—also shares similarities in appearance and background. She, too, possesses a certain pure, ordinary quality, and after gaining popularity among connoisseurs, she had a massive breakthrough in a morning drama. They also share the fact that they’ve steadily built up their experience starting as child actors. Watching their success makes me feel the maturity of the Japanese entertainment industry, where properly cultivated talent is recognized,” (ibid.)

So, is the key “transparency plus talent”? That’s something you can’t easily achieve through plastic surgery. It really drives home just how tough the entertainment industry is.
