A Pachinko Date with His Rumored Girlfriend, Whom He Calls “Juliet”

In a fashionable neighborhood where actors, artists, and entrepreneurs spend their evenings sipping wine, a couple was spotted walking a small Jack Russell Terrier.

The man holding the leash was distinguished by his mustache. Even when the dog briefly lifted its hind leg to mark a utility pole, he didn’t so much as flinch.

Three steps behind him followed a beautiful woman who resembled actress Emi Takei. She was apparently in charge of cleaning up after the dog. Her long hair flowing behind her, she hurried over and poured bottled water over the utility pole.

Afterward, the two stopped at an upscale supermarket with an extensive selection of organic foods before returning to a luxury high-rise condominium.

It was a familiar sight in this neighborhood, but something about the scene felt strikingly out of place. The reason was probably that the man in question was comedian Yoichi Okano, 44.

“He got hooked on gambling back in his student days and accumulated debts of 18 million yen by borrowing money from anyone and everyone. He has become one of the comedy world’s most notorious loser comedians, an indispensable presence on variety shows and gambling-themed programs.” (Sports newspaper entertainment reporter)

The star of the loser-comedian world enjoying an elegant, celebrity-style date. A clue to this mystery could be found on the radio program Odoriba, hosted by the comedy duo Kukai Kaidan, where Okano appears as a semi-regular. He frequently shares stories about dates with a woman he calls “Juliet.”

“Juliet is also a huge gambling enthusiast. Apparently, on their days off, the two enjoy pachinko and horse racing together. When they can’t decide what to eat, they sometimes engage in a peculiar dating activity they call ‘tailing someone for a meal’: they follow a complete stranger and eat at the same restaurant as that person. They seem to enjoy all sorts of unusual dates.” (Same source as above)

Indeed, even their dog-walking routine was unconventional. Could it be thanks to his girlfriend that Okano is able to enjoy such a luxurious private life?

“She was already living in the high-rise condo, and it seems Okano moved in with her. He doesn’t pay rent, so they’re living together in a kept-man arrangement. They seem to get along well, but I hear Okano is reluctant to marry because he feels that ‘having a happy family doesn’t fit my character.’” (Senior entertainment agency executive)

Some time later, Okano emerged from the high-rise condo on his way to participate in a fifth-anniversary special for the YouTube pachinko show Mogura × Okano’s Kuzupachi. A “FRIDAY” reporter approached him directly.

—You intend to marry Juliet, right?

“That’s the plan!”

After making the emphatic declaration, Okano bowed to the reporter, passed through the ticket gates, and hurried toward the platform.

Will this loser’s version of Romeo and Juliet have a happy ending?
