Anri Saito (36, pseudonym), who lives in Osaka, is an “independent escort” not affiliated with any adult entertainment establishment.
Instead of working for an agency, she filed her own business registration, rented an office, and hired a driver. She handles everything herself—from attracting customers and managing reservations to providing services and filing her tax returns—and keeps all her revenue after expenses.
“I specialize in M-style erotic services. The standard rate is 50,000 yen for 90 minutes, plus tips. Everything except expenses goes into my pay. My monthly income is around 1.5 million yen.”
Why did she end up running her “own business”?

Entering the Adult Entertainment Industry to Pay for Tuition

The reason she entered the adult entertainment industry was “tuition.”
“After I enrolled at a well-known private university in the Kansai region, I discovered that my parents were burdened with a huge amount of debt. Maybe out of pride, they’d kept it hidden from our relatives and us children. So, naturally, the automatic bank withdrawals for my college tuition stopped…”
Anri had been working part-time at a local okonomiyaki restaurant since high school. The hourly wage of 1,100 yen wasn’t bad, but of course, there was no way she could pay for college tuition.
“I considered working at a hostess club, but with daily pay, I’d never be able to keep up. I couldn’t rely on my parents, so my only options were to drop out, take a leave of absence, or work in the adult entertainment industry.”
The first place she chose to work was a delivery escort service.
“Once I’d saved up enough for tuition, I’d take a break from the sex industry. If I needed money for something like a study camp, I’d earn just enough through the delivery health service to cover the participation fee… So it was strictly on-call work. After that, I couldn’t get used to the passive nature of the outcall service, where I was just on the receiving end of the client’s advances, so I ended up trying out a men’s spa on a whim. At a men’s spa, the girls are completely in control. Since I could take the lead in the sessions myself, that was the first time I thought, ‘Wait, maybe I’m actually cut out for this?’”
I graduated from college without a hitch and got a job. I retired from the adult entertainment industry. My new workplace was a school health office.
“I became a school nurse and married a fellow teacher, but things didn’t work out… Following the divorce, I moved to another prefecture and decided to continue teaching. However, to work as a teacher across prefectural lines, I had to take the teacher certification exam all over again.
So, while I was studying at Tokyo Academy—a test-prep school that offered courses for the teacher certification exam and other exams—I started working at a men’s spa again to earn some extra pocket money.”
At my second adult entertainment job—a men’s massage parlor—I developed a relationship with a client who enjoyed being dominated (M), and he recommended a shop in my hometown region of Kansai that was famous for its M-style sensual services.
“I was starting to sense my own talent as an S, so I transferred there, and became the top-ranked employee within a year.”

Why a Popular Escort Earning 2 Million Yen a Month Decided to Go Independent

Before she knew it, Anri had become a full-time sex worker. She began to enjoy making money, and her dream for the future was to “achieve FIRE through the sex industry.” Her monthly income had exceeded 2 million yen, but—
“The male staff at that shop were idiots. Every day, they’d send messages to the shop’s LINE account saying things like, ‘Let’s make a billion yen and achieve FIRE!’ or ‘If you make 2 million yen a month, you’ll save 100 million yen in five years!’ They completely ignored taxes, rent, and living expenses.‘How the hell am I supposed to save 2 million yen a month when I’m only making 2 million a month?!’ I thought to myself. I realized that if I stayed there, I’d never be able to achieve FIRE in my lifetime.”

I was also bothered by the club’s order to “don’t file a tax return.”
“They must have been pulling some shady tax schemes. Instead of teaching the performers how to file tax returns, they’d say, ‘It’s not necessary—no one will find out.’ All the performers believed them. What would they do if the tax authorities came knocking once they’d saved 100 million yen? I felt strongly that I couldn’t work under such idiots.
After searching all over social media, I found a certified administrative scrivener and learned that I could run an adult entertainment business on my own. All I had to do was rent an office, get a license under the Adult Entertainment Business Act, and file a business registration as a delivery health service. At first, I thought about asking the administrative scrivener for help, but I was able to do everything myself.”
She says the only expenses were the rent for a cheap apartment to use as an office, plus the cost of a rental car and a driver on workdays.
“Clients buy the lotions and props used during sessions, and of course, they cover the hotel costs as well. Everything I pay for is a business expense, and since all the service fees go directly to me, it’s quite efficient.”
She isn’t listed on any adult entertainment websites and doesn’t have a website of her own. Her only means of attracting customers and taking reservations is her X account. Even so, she says she hasn’t had any trouble.
“I brought over all the regular clients who had been booking me before. Before I quit, I gave them my account and told them, ‘Please book through here from now on.’ This is called a ‘bombing tactic’—it’s technically not allowed, but I think most sex workers do it.”

Wives Showing Up Unannounced, Private Investigators, Claims for Compensation… Troubles Unique to “Independent Sex Workers”

Anri laughs and calls the clients she brings in “trustworthy masochists,” but hasn’t she ever had any scary experiences?
“Not with the clients themselves, no. But I do have a lot of trouble with their wives. Since I work independently, it looks like an affair from the wives’ perspective. So far, I’ve had wives show up at my place twice, been followed by private investigators three times, and I’ve even been sued (laughs).”
The person who sued was the wife of my longest-standing client. Her claim was, “My family fell apart because of you, Anri. Pay me compensation for emotional distress.”
“To begin with, that marriage was already falling apart—they were living apart under the same roof. Plus, that client was a business owner who was about to file for personal bankruptcy. I’d heard he was planning a divorce and had transferred the titles to his home and car to his wife’s name to prevent them from being seized by the bankruptcy trustee. Even so, I guess she wanted to get money out of me too.He even hired a private investigator and a lawyer.”
Anri calmly explained that she was simply an independent sex worker and that there was no extramarital affair, and that she had no money to pay, but the client wouldn’t back down.
“Finally, when I told him, ‘I know about the planned divorce, too. If I make this public, wouldn’t it be detrimental to your wife?’, he immediately withdrew the lawsuit. After all, he had to protect his home and car rather than pay me any compensation.”

As soon as the trial ended, I found out that the wife of another client had also hired a private investigator to follow me.
“My biggest client was a private practice doctor, and she was his wife. She’d had a private investigator tailing me for about two years. By the time we met, they’d already been living apart for five years, and the client had been saying he wanted a divorce the whole time.
But his wife was a full-time housewife who’d never held a job—she probably didn’t have much experience with the real world. I suspect she was persuaded by a unscrupulous lawyer who told her, ‘You can get compensation for emotional distress.’ I even think the private investigator might have been in on it.Normally, if a private investigator had been tailing me for two years, they would have figured out by then that I was running my own adult entertainment business. So I told the wife, ‘Dragging this out is just a waste of money.’”

In fact, she apparently has experience working as a reader model.

However, she says she anticipated these kinds of problems from the very beginning of her business.
“I keep very detailed notes on my clients, and if I get worried, I look up the law right away. For example, even if you’ve filed the necessary paperwork, if you engage in sexual intercourse and the wife finds out, you’ll have to pay compensation. Girls who don’t know the law often get involved in sugar dating too casually, get sued by the wife, and end up having to pay compensation, don’t they?”
Even so, Anri says there are significant advantages to running an adult entertainment business independently.
“First of all, the money is good. My monthly income was actually higher when I worked at an agency—I made 2 million yen working five days a week—but the agency took half of it. Now I make 1.5 million yen working just two days a week.Just the other day, a client gave me a 2 million yen gift, saying, ‘My wife might have found out I’ve been visiting sex workers. I don’t know when I’ll be able to see you again.’ Maybe because I work independently, quite a few clients give me tips of 10,000 yen or more.”
Of course, not every sex worker can go independent.
“I’m able to manage my clients on my own. Honestly, I think I can do it because I’m reasonably smart. Girls who rely mainly on romantic tactics to attract customers, those who can’t speak their minds clearly, or those who aren’t good with numbers—I definitely think they’re better off working for an agency.”
If you look only at the figure—“1.5 million yen a month working two days a week”—it seems like a dream job. But you have to shoulder all the responsibility on your own, from attracting customers and managing client relationships to handling taxes, legal matters, and even troubles arising from clients’ family situations. Anri says she “wouldn’t recommend this way of working to just anyone.”
Breaking free from the agency and becoming a “business” in her own right—
Her current savings total 150 million yen. Her goal of “FIRE” no longer seems like a pipe dream.
