Lady Gaga’s Long-Awaited Journey to Motherhood—Why She Chose Surrogacy for Her First Child
Pregnancy rumors in 2024
U.S. media outlets have reported that Lady Gaga (40) and her fiancé, entrepreneur Michael Polansky (42), have welcomed their first child.
The U.S. entertainment site “Page Six” published photos on September 11 (local time) of Gaga out with Polansky and their baby for the first time since giving birth. Gaga was seen holding the baby against her chest, accompanied by Polansky and other people close to them.
According to the news site “TMZ,” the baby is a girl named Rose Bean Polansky. She was reportedly born via surrogate at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles at 11:19 p.m. on June 9.
Gaga and Polansky were first reported to be dating in 2020, when they were spotted kissing at a New Year’s Eve party in Las Vegas. In July 2024, Gaga performed at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics, where she introduced Polansky to French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal as her fiancé. The moment was reported by the media, making their engagement public.
Polansky graduated from Harvard University and has built a career as a tech entrepreneur.
“In June 2024, rumors began circulating that Gaga was pregnant after she appeared to have a visible baby bump while attending the wedding of her younger sister, fashion designer Natalie Germanotta (34). Gaga herself denied the rumors on social media. Since then, there had been no further talk of a pregnancy, so Hollywood was thrown into a frenzy by the sudden news that she had welcomed her first child.
It is common for many Hollywood celebrities to publicly announce their pregnancies. Beyoncé (45), Kim Kardashian (45), and Rihanna (38), for example, have made headlines by posting photos of their growing baby bumps on Instagram. More recently, Anne Hathaway (43) announced her pregnancy after the release of ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ and has appeared at public events with a prominent baby bump.
It was puzzling that Gaga never made an announcement, but once it became known that she had used a surrogate, people have taken it as a case of, ‘Ah, so that’s why.’” (Hollywood insider)
After wrapping up her world tour, “The Mayhem Ball,” in April following nearly nine months and 86 performances around the world, Gaga and Polansky reportedly kept out of the public eye and quietly enjoyed their new lives as parents.
Gaga had reportedly been hoping to become pregnant since around the time she became engaged to Polansky, but health issues had made her hesitant. Friends of Gaga told “Page Six” that she had been through many ups and downs on her journey to becoming a mother, and that the road to her happy ending was truly a story of hardship, both physically and emotionally.
The problems Gaga has faced
In 2013, Gaga fractured her hip and underwent surgery. In the 2017 Netflix documentary “Gaga: Five Foot Two,” she revealed that she was living with fibromyalgia, a chronic condition that causes severe pain and fatigue throughout the body.
In 2021, she appeared in the Apple TV+ mental health documentary series “The Me You Can’t See,” where she revealed that she had been repeatedly raped by a music producer at the age of 19, became pregnant as a result, and suffered a mental breakdown. Given the numerous hardships she has endured both physically and mentally, it is not difficult to imagine that she was cautious about becoming pregnant with and announcing her first child.
When Gaga appeared on CBS’s late-night talk show “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” last November, she said:
“There are so many things that I want to do. All possibilities are open. But what I really want right now is to become a mom. I think that’s my next starring role.”
As a singer-songwriter, she has won 16 Grammy Awards and sold more than 170 million albums. In the 2018 film “A Star Is Born,” she starred in the movie and co-wrote its theme song, winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song and receiving a nomination for Best Actress. For such an extraordinary artist, whose next starring role is becoming a mother—considering everything Gaga has experienced throughout her life, those words carry considerable weight.
Gaga has finally realized her long-held wish. As both a singer and an actress, expectations are high for the new chapter she is set to open.
