Kawai’s busy schedule and his devotion to a one way love

Just before 7 a.m. in mid-September. A man radiating an overwhelming aura of charisma emerged from an apartment building in a central Tokyo neighborhood where lush greenery and nostalgic downtown scenery blend together.

His casual outfit—a tracksuit from a famous sports brand, khaki pants, stylish sunglasses with tinted lenses, and a knit cap to get an early start on the autumn look—was impeccably put together. With a way of walking that somehow evoked Takuya Kimura (53), the man was none other than Fumito Kawai (38), a former member of the idol group “A.B.C-Z.”

It appeared that he was just leaving home to head to the live broadcast of the Iwate local TV program “Saturday Funkies” (Iwate Menkoi Television), where he serves as MC. As a light rain began to fall, the rear door of the waiting vehicle opened, and Kawai quickly climbed in and headed off to work.

“Kawai joined the former Johnny & Associates agency at the age of 11 and made his major debut in 2012 as a member of ‘A.B.C-Z.’ While establishing himself as a top idol, he also developed his talents as a TV personality through his impressions that showcased his love of Johnny’s, his physically committed comedy on variety shows, and his outstanding MC skills.

In particular, he admires Takuya Kimura, a senior at the same agency, to the point of calling him ‘God,’ and his impressions of Kimura’s way of speaking and walking are among his most popular bits. In 2023, he announced two goals—to have my own show by the age of 40 and to establish myself as an MC—and announced his departure from the group. That decision paid off, and he currently appears regularly on nine programs, including television and radio shows as well as streaming-platform programs. His activities, centered on his work as an MC, have expanded nationwide, with appearances in Iwate, Saitama, Shizuoka, Aichi, and other prefectures. This year, he also appeared in the stage production “Shitai toka,” “Shitakunai no Hanashi Janai 2026,” his first stage appearance in five years.

How they met

About two hours after the car carrying Kawai drove away, shortly after 9 a.m., a woman emerged from the escalator leading to the same apartment building. She was dressed simply in a gray hoodie, sweatpants, and glasses, but her glowing bare skin and well-proportioned figure gave off an unmistakable aura of beauty. The slightly sleepy-looking woman was Moe Toyota (31), who works as a voice actress.

“Toyota is a popular voice actress who has appeared in series such as ‘Sound! Euphonium, BanG Dream!,’ and ‘Flying Babies.’ She was originally an otaku girl who loved manga, anime, and games, and began pursuing a career as a voice actress during her third year of high school.

Since then, while making voice acting the center of her career, she has also taken on radio, stage performances, and gravure work. This year as well, she has been expanding her presence across a wide range of fields, appearing in reading theater productions, stage greetings for film releases, and horse-racing events.” (Person in the anime industry)

On this day, Toyota appeared at a stage greeting for the second part of “Sound! Euphonium: The Final Movement,” the theatrical conclusion to the “Sound! Euphonium” series, in which she plays a major role. The film is an anime depicting the passionate youth of high school students devoted to wind-band music and is one of her signature works. On stage, she looked completely different from the casual outfit she had been wearing earlier, dressed in a pale pink satin dress and beaming with a radiant smile.

Kawai, who successfully transitioned from one of Japan’s leading idols to a multifaceted TV personality, and Toyota, one of the rising stars of the voice-acting world. At first glance, the two might not seem to have much in common.

“Kawai and Toyota reportedly met at a bar in Tokyo around the beginning of 2021. Toyota, who had always been a fan of idols, asked a mutual acquaintance to introduce her to Kawai, and when they actually met, they hit it off immediately. However, the two did not start dating right away.”

A romance with Kawai, who is in demand nationwide, was already looking difficult from the outset. Nevertheless, it seems the distance between the two gradually grew closer.
