Shinichi Tsutsumi Becomes a Video Streamer!

In a corner of a street bustling with young people, a stylish older man sits hunched over in a director’s chair placed on the sidewalk… It’s actor Shinichi Tsutsumi (62).

On this day, filming featuring Tsutsumi was taking place on a street right next to JR Harajuku Station (Shibuya Ward, Tokyo).

“We’re filming for *Mou Papa!* (Asahi Broadcasting Corporation/TV Asahi), which premieres on October 4. The series is an entirely original story by Erika Yoshida, who wrote the script for the first half of the 2024 NHK morning drama series *Tora ni Tsubasa*.The lead role is played by Nana Harada (23), who portrays 18-year-old college student Kiko Tarayama, while Tsutsumi plays her father, Ryota Tarayama.

When Kiko stopped attending school during elementary school, Ryota began streaming on a video site in an effort to make her smile—but a clip of an angry Kiko shouting, “Stop calling me ‘Dad’!” went viral.“Ever since then—for the past 12 years—Ryota has been working as a video creator with the goal of reaching one million subscribers. Kiko, however, can’t bring herself to tell Ryota ‘No’ when she really means it. Centered on this father-daughter duo, the story depicts family conflicts and renewal,” says a TV magazine writer.

Tsutsumi and Hara, who play father and daughter, previously co-starred in the 2013 film *Why Don’t You Just Die in Hell?*, making this their second collaboration.In that film, Hara played the 10-year-old daughter of a yakuza boss who appeared in commercials, while Tsutsumi played the yakuza boss who was a fan of the girl but was at odds with her father.

Regarding their reunion as father and daughter in this new project, Tsutsumi commented,

“We co-starred in a movie a long time ago, and I remember those scenes, but I was shocked to see that the little girl from back then has grown up so much! That just goes to show how much I’ve aged myself (laughs).” (From the official Asahi Broadcasting Corporation website)

Filming took place right next to Harajuku Station, which was teeming with young people. Tsutsumi wore a bright blue shirt over a striped one. Standing alone on the sidewalk in this youth-filled neighborhood, he stood out even from a distance. When the director called “Cut,” Tsutsumi waited in the corner of the sidewalk, just as described at the beginning.He looked a bit tired, but his actor’s aura was still radiating. Meanwhile, it seemed Hara’s scene was being filmed a short distance away. When asked about her impression of Tsutsumi, with whom she was co-starring for the first time in a long while,

“We worked together about 13 years ago when I was a child actor. Even after so long, he’s still just as wonderful. He chatted with me a lot during filming and even gave me some tea he recommended for my cold hands—he really treats me like a dad,” (same source as above)
