<h3> The “Super High School-Level Player” Setting Midsummer Koshien Ablaze: Riku Takabe [Seirei Christopher]</h3>
<p> After striking out the 27th batter, the usually quiet Riku Takabe thrust his left fist and the glove on his right hand skyward.Even as he lost his balance after his foot got caught in the mound’s indentation, the left-hander who led Seirei Christopher (Shizuoka) to Koshien for the second consecutive year let out a roar.</p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> “I was aiming for a strikeout on the last pitch. The sight of my teammates rushing toward me was the best. I want to see that same scene at Koshien again.”</span></p>
<p> Alongside Ryosuke Sueyoshi of Okinawa Shogaku, Takabe is one of the leading left-handers of his generation and a strong candidate for the U-18 Samurai Japan team. His top speed was 150 km/h, a mark he also hit in the final against Tokoha University Kikugawa, and Takabe pitched a complete game in that match on just 89 pitches.</p>

<p> In six games at the Shizuoka Prefectural Tournament, he pitched 36 and two-thirds innings and struck out 48 batters—a number far exceeding the number of innings pitched. The fact that he recorded so many strikeouts while throwing so few pitches is likely proof that he throws almost no wasted pitches and possesses consistent control.His repertoire of breaking balls is also diverse, including a slider, curveball, cutter, changeup, and two-seam fastball.</p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> “During bullpen sessions, I’ve worked hard on practicing throwing inside to a batter standing in the right-handed batter’s box.Against left-handed batters, I’ve also been conscious of working the outside corner. That’s why I was able to throw aggressive pitches all summer long. In terms of stamina, thanks to my daily runs between the poles, I was able to pitch four consecutive games starting from the fourth round while feeling that I had more energy left than I expected. I’ve really grown over the past year.”</span></p>

<p> His weight, which was around 65 kg last summer, has increased to 74 kg, and his thighs, in particular, are as thick as logs.</p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> “I think my physical transformation was a success.”</span></p>
<p> Catcher Yuto Kakehi had this to say about the reliable ace:</p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> “Even when he’s off the field, he’s always thinking about baseball. During meals, he’ll suddenly say, ‘I’m cutting back on fat today,’ and start carefully selecting what to eat to maintain his condition (laughs). He’s an ace who’s very conscious of his nutrition.”</span></p>

<h3>&#8220;Throw with everything you&#8217;ve got.&#8221;</h3>
<p> Two summers ago, when I went to watch the early rounds of the Shizuoka Tournament, I noticed an unusually large number of scouts.Having absolutely no idea who they were there to see, I asked a Seirei coach, who simply replied, “They’re probably here to watch our Takabe.” That was how I first met Takabe, and in that day’s game, he took the mound and, with his dynamic pitching form, completely outmaneuvered the opposing team’s upperclassmen.</p>
<p> During his junior high school years, he played for the Musashi Arashiyama Boys and, despite attracting attention as a prodigy, chose a new school in Shizuoka that had never made it to Koshien.He decided to entrust his future to the philosophy of “baseball played with your head and heart” espoused by former head coach Toshimasa Uemura (who stepped down this past March), who was at the helm during the 2022 Senbatsu selection controversy.</p>

<p> The day before the final, former manager Kamimura—who is now focusing on his duties as principal—told Takabe:</p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> “Tomorrow, pitch as if your life depends on it.”</span></p>
<p> Takabe interpreted this as follows:</p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> “I took it to mean that I should throw every single pitch with all my heart—to the point where I could collapse right after the final game ended. I was able to throw every single pitch without holding back.”</span></p>

<p> Last year, they left the sacred grounds with just one win. This year, in the second game of the tournament’s second day, they faced Sano Nihon University High School (Tochigi).</p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> “I enrolled with the determination to lead Seirei to Koshien, and I’ve been able to compete there twice. I want to make this the longest summer of anyone’s and be selected for Samurai Japan.”</span></p>
<p> Although he has been attracting the attention of scouts since his freshman summer, he has already received a conditional offer to attend Aoyama Gakuin University.</p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> “My plans won’t change based on the results at Koshien.” <br>
