Suspect Kawai, who was arrested and referred to prosecutors on charges of giving alcohol to a minor and sexually assaulting her

“We had consensual sex.”

The man in black-rimmed glasses who emerged from the Metropolitan Police Department building walked with his head bowed the entire time—perhaps to hide his face—before boarding the police van. His demeanor betrayed not a shred of the dignity one would expect from an elite physician.

Three men, including Dr. Hideki Kawai (31) and Yuichi Furukawa (30), the CEO of a web consulting firm, were arrested by the Takinogawa Police Station of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department by July 23 on charges of pliesing alcohol to an underage girl and sexually assaulting her.

“On the night of April 18, Kawai and his accomplices held a social gathering at a vacation rental in Bunkyo Ward billed as a ‘gathering of business executives and doctors who graduated from the University of Tokyo.’ Five men and five women participated.Although the victim was a minor, she was unable to refuse her friend’s invitation to drink and became intoxicated. Police believe she was subsequently sexually assaulted by Kawai and his accomplices. The victim reported the incident to the police station that same day, which led to the discovery of the case,” said a reporter from the social affairs desk of a national newspaper.

Although Kawai is not a graduate of the University of Tokyo, according to his publicly available profile, he graduated from the medical school of a private university, worked at Keio University Hospital, and has been employed at a cosmetic and plastic surgery clinic since 2021.In 2022, he was affiliated with the Department of Ophthalmology at Nagoya University School of Medicine (Editor’s note: The official name is “Department of Ophthalmology and Sensory Organ Disorder Control, School of Medicine and Graduate School of Medicine, Nagoya University”).

He was currently working as a cosmetic surgeon at the clinic he owns and as an ophthalmologist at Toyohashi City Hospital in Aichi Prefecture.

“Suspect Kawai promoted his own clinic on social media using the title ‘a doctor who excels in both ophthalmology and cosmetic surgery,’ and posted numerous before-and-after photos of cosmetic surgery patients.

Four months before his arrest, he posted a short video in a Q&A format. In response to the question, ‘Are there any tips for choosing a doctor to perform dark circle removal (under the eyes)?’ he looked directly at the camera and said, ‘Choosing a doctor who, like me, practices both ophthalmology and cosmetic surgery—that’s your top choice!’ he said, raising his index finger and smiling for the camera,” said the Social Affairs reporter mentioned earlier.

A similar case that comes to mind is the rape incident in 2016 involving a Chiba University School of Medicine student and a resident physician working at Chiba University Hospital.

At a drinking party attended by more than a dozen male and female students at an izakaya in Chiba City, the men pretended to take care of a heavily intoxicated female student and led her to the restroom, where four men took turns committing indecent acts against her. They then moved to an apartment where one of the men lived, where three of them sexually assaulted her until morning. In this heinous case, the two men who were arrested were sentenced to four and three years in prison, respectively.

That same year, a case of forcible indecency and assault involving five students from the University of Tokyo also occurred. Those arrested were members of a club formed “for the purpose of getting women drunk and committing indecent acts.” On the day of the incident, they held a drinking party at an izakaya in Tokyo with a female student from another university.Once the woman became intoxicated, they moved to an apartment building and sexually assaulted her. In this case, three men were indicted and received suspended sentences.

In both cases, the incidents occurred at “mixer” parties organized by men considered “elite”—those with high incomes and advanced educational backgrounds. Did the suspects, including Kawai, who were arrested this time, simply go too far, or was this a premeditated crime?

According to the police station, suspect Furukawa denies the charges, but suspect Kawai has stated, “We had consensual sex.” Authorities are continuing their investigation, suspecting there may be additional charges.
