The two went out wearing matching black outfits. When Ms. A spoke to him with a cute smile, Mamiya smiled gently back.

Last year, he starred in the drama *Ignite: Outlaws of the Law* and other projects,
and the stage play *One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest*, in which he serves as the lead actor, has also been generating a lot of buzz

A shopping district near one of Tokyo’s most exclusive residential neighborhoods, home to business tycoons, artists, and popular idols. At the exit of a supermarket in one corner of that district stood a strapping man exuding an extraordinary aura.Wearing a black jacket and a leather cap, staring intently at his smartphone with eyes that seemed ready to burst, was actor Shotaro Mamiya (33).

It was 9:00 p.m. Just as I was wondering if he was feeling restless while checking the score of a Hanshin Tigers game—a team he’s a huge fan of—a beautiful woman appeared right before his eyes. It was Ms. A, his wife, with whom he announced his marriage in 2024. Perhaps they’d gone on a lavish shopping spree at that very supermarket, as Mamiya was clutching a huge plastic bag.Walking half a step ahead of Ms. A, who was carrying the bags, his kindness in escorting his wife was evident.

“Back in his 20s, Mamiya gave his all—not just to work, but to party as well. There were even nights when not even his manager could get in touch with him. However, I hear he stopped going out at night completely about three or four years ago, when he started dating Ms. A. Ryo Narita (32), who used to be part of his social circle, even grumbled, ‘Mamiya’s been hard to hang out with lately.’ I suppose her presence has made him grow up,” said a source at a talent agency.

Ms. A’s presence is also having a positive impact on his work. In the April 2022 drama season, Mamiya took on his first lead role in a prime-time series, *Namba MG5* (Fuji TV), and over the following four years, his number of lead roles in movies and dramas skyrocketed to eight. In his most recent solo lead role, in the April 2022 drama “Ignite: Outlaw of the Law” (TBS), he gave a passionate performance as a protagonist who became a lawyer to avenge his father’s wrongful death.

His success isn’t limited to the world of film and television. He is currently starring in the stage play *One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest* and is in the midst of a nationwide tour visiting five cities. Takahiko Kageyama, a professor in the Department of Media Creation at Doshisha Women’s College of Liberal Arts, comments:

“Until about five years ago, I had the impression that Mamiya was particularly skilled at playing straightforward characters. For example, his portrayal of Tetta Kisaki in the 2021 film *Tokyo Revengers* was a perfect fit.On the other hand, I had the impression she struggled with complex roles involving inner turmoil, but recently, I feel she has broadened her acting range. In the October 2022 season of *Good Things, Bad Things* (Nippon TV), she delivered a superb performance as a challenging character haunted by the trauma of past bullying.”

These professional changes are also evident off-camera. On set, he has increasingly taken the lead as the lead actor, guiding those around him. A production company representative revealed:

“Director Shunsuke Karayama (48) of *Good Things, Bad Things* praised him highly, saying, ‘He creates a harmonious atmosphere by actively striking up conversations with those around him.’ It seems that since starting a family, he’s been able to pay even more attention to those around him than before.”

Last year, his long-awaited first child was born. Now that he’s a father, Mamiya never fails to spend time with his family.

“It seems he’s treating his wife—who’s been working hard with childcare—to his specialty, mapo tofu. I hear that spending time with his family is his greatest source of comfort right now,” said the agency representative mentioned earlier.

The happy shopping outing witnessed by FRIDAY must have been a precious opportunity for Mamiya to recharge. Drawing strength from his family, Mamiya’s rise to stardom continues.
