<h2> Not fixated on the party name</h2>
 The new party, the “Centrist Reform Alliance” (abbreviated as “Centrist”), marked its half-year anniversary in July since its launch in January 2026.Born as a “people-first” alternative to counter the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) through the unification of Constitutional Democratic Party and Komeito lawmakers in the House of Representatives, the party suffered a significant loss of seats in the recent general election.
 To stage a comeback, unity is needed toward a full three-party merger involving the Center, the Constitutional Democratic Party, and Komeito—including their House of Councillors and local organizations—but the path forward remains shrouded in thick fog.

 On the July 16, ’26 broadcast of “Hodo 1930” (BS-TBS), Constitutional Democratic Party House of Councillors member Kiyomi Tsujimoto (66) stated
 “It will be quite difficult [for the Constitutional Democratic Party and Komeito to merge in the House of Councillors],”
 and added,
 “I think that’s also a possibility [of the Center Party returning to the Constitutional Democratic Party]. I believe there’s also the option of going back to the way things were, or starting over from scratch,”
 Many Constitutional Democratic lawmakers are showing resistance to a merger. How will this realignment of the largest opposition party affect the political landscape ahead of the “unified local elections” approaching next spring and the “House of Councillors election” scheduled for the year after next?
 The biggest strength touted by those pushing for the merger is the creation of a “clear alternative to the ruling party” for voters.By uniting the opposition and centrist forces—which had been fragmented under the single-member district system—it becomes possible to create a “one-on-one” dynamic against the LDP-Komeito coalition government, generating a level of tension similar to that of a two-party system. Junya Ogawa (55), leader of the centrist party, has often stated,
 “There are limits to continuing to operate on one wheel. We want to aim for the most desirable configuration,”
 and insists on pushing forward with the three-party merger.

 “With Komeito’s strong nationwide organizational vote—which it prides itself on—and the support networks such as the Rengo (Japanese Trade Union Confederation) that back the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, we can accumulate a certain number of votes.That said, in reality, it’s far from being a simple case of 1 + 1 = 2. For example, in Osaka’s 16th District—where the Constitutional Democratic Party and Komeito have historically been locked in a fierce battle—Kanae Yamamoto of Komeito received 55,000 votes and Hiroyuki Moriyama of the Constitutional Democratic Party received just over 50,000 votes in the 2024 general election.
 However, in this year’s general election, Ms. Yamamoto shifted to the proportional representation block, and although the centrist camp focused solely on Mr. Moriyama in the single-member district, he managed to secure only 47,000 votes—fewer than in the election before last.“Even taking into account the impact of the Takaichi phenomenon, there is no doubt that this crushing defeat in the general election had an impact significant enough to make many Constitutional Democratic lawmakers hesitate to merge,” said a political reporter for a national newspaper.
 Perhaps in an effort to shake off that negative image, Komeito Secretary-General Minoru Nishida (63), who is in favor of the merger, stated on July 3,
 “There is no need to cling to the party name ‘Centrist,’”
 , indicating a willingness to change the party’s name in preparation for the three-party merger.

<h2>Ahead of the House of Councillors election the year after next</h2>
 However, now that half a year has passed, the “side effects” of the merger are beginning to surface. The biggest sticking point is “differences in basic policies and principles.”Opinions are divided between the centrist Komeito faction and the left-wing faction of the Constitutional Democratic Party regarding the restart of nuclear power plants, security-related laws, and even amendments to the Imperial House Law. If they cannot reconcile these differences, they will invite criticism that the alliance is merely a “numbers game” for electoral purposes.

 The second issue is “backlash from their respective support bases.” The support base for Komeito, rooted in the Soka Gakkai, and that of the Constitutional Democratic Party, centered on labor unions, have long been at odds. Emotional resistance among grassroots campaigners on the ground remains deep-seated, and the alliance has not yielded any synergistic effects during the election campaign.
 A Constitutional Democratic Party member of the House of Councillors told a reporter,
 “Honestly, it’s going to be tough to get local support for a merger with the centrist bloc. Our supporters won’t buy it,”
 This uncertain situation is already having a decisive impact on future national and local elections. Confusion on the ground is inevitable in the “unified local elections” scheduled for next spring. Local lawmakers have stated,
 “We want to run under the ‘Constitutional Democratic’ or ‘Komeito’ banners we’ve cultivated over many years, rather than as a centrist-backed candidate,”
 If the merger policy led by the party headquarters and the efforts on the ground fail to align, there is a risk that both sides will go down together.
 Moreover, the “House of Councillors election” to be held the summer after next will be the true test of this merger. Coordinating candidates in multi-member districts and allocating votes in proportional representation blocks will be extremely complex; if the current policy divides and public skepticism cannot be resolved and dispelled, the result could end up giving the ruling coalition a massive advantage.
 Political commentator Harumi Arima told this website,
 “Moderate leader Ogawa is aiming for a merger before the extraordinary session of the Diet this fall, but considering the House of Councillors election next summer, this is a very tight timeline. When you factor in candidate selection, getting the new party name to catch on with voters, and securing the understanding and support of local supporters, two years will fly by. That is why they are rushing the three-party merger,”
 Marking the half-year anniversary of the party’s founding, the outcome of the three-party talks leading up to the extraordinary session of the Diet this fall may significantly shape the political landscape in Japan.
