<h2>An intimate date</h2>
<p class="PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer" data-start="154" data-end="321">The queen of Japanese music and a charismatic intellectual—an unlikely celebrity couple had apparently been quietly nurturing their relationship out of the public eye.</p>
<p data-start="323" data-end="451">At around 7:30 p.m. in late May, a man and a woman emerged from the jazz club and restaurant &#8220;Blue Note Tokyo&#8221; in central Tokyo.</p>
<p data-start="453" data-end="848">The woman, recognizable by her rounded bob haircut with outward-curving ends and her large, expressive eyes peeking out from behind a mask, was none other than the immensely popular singer-songwriter Ringo Sheena (47). Dressed casually in a white long-sleeved T-shirt and overalls from an ultra-luxury brand, she projected not so much an air of authority as a youthful, almost girlish charm.</p>
<p data-start="850" data-end="1220">Walking beside her was a tall, slender man wearing glasses and standing about a head taller than she was. He spent the entire time staring at his smartphone as they walked. He had the unmistakable appearance of an intellectual—and for good reason. He was Yusuke Narita (40), the economist often described as one of the defining intellectual figures of the Reiwa era.</p>
<p data-start="850" data-end="1220"><strong>&#8220;After making her debut in 1998 with &#8216;Kōfukuron (Theory of Happiness),&#8217; Sheena released a string of hit songs, including &#8216;Kabukichō no Joō (Queen of Kabukichō),&#8217; &#8216;Koko de Kiss Shite (Kiss Me Here),&#8217; and &#8216;Honnō (Instinct).&#8217; Her first album, &#8216;Muzai Moratorium (Innocent Moratorium),&#8217; released in 1999, sold more than a million copies, while her second album, &#8216;Shōso Strip&#8217; (Winning Strip), released in 2000, sold more than 2.3 million copies, cementing her place in Japanese music history. In 2004, she formed the band Tokyo Jihen, and between her solo career and the band, she has appeared a total of eleven times on NHK&#8217;s annual &#8216;Kōhaku Uta Gassen.&#8217; She is unquestionably one of Japan&#8217;s most iconic artists,&#8221;</strong> said a source in the music industry.</p>
<p data-start="1983" data-end="2221">Narita, meanwhile, graduated from the University of Tokyo and earned his doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In addition to serving as an assistant professor at Yale University, he has also worked as an entrepreneur.</p>
<p data-start="2223" data-end="2446" data-is-last-node="" data-is-only-node="">In recent years, he has become an extremely popular commentator, appearing regularly on programs such as &#8220;Hōdō Station&#8221; (TV Asahi) as well as on the YouTube channel &#8220;PIVOT,&#8221; making him a familiar face across Japanese media.</p>

<h2>Two people brought together by talent</h2>
<p class="PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer" data-start="42" data-end="285">On that day, &#8220;Blue Note Tokyo&#8221; was hosting a performance by the celebrated trumpeter Arturo Sandoval (76), a multiple Grammy Award winner, who had returned to Japan for the first time in eight years in support of his latest album, &#8220;SANGÚ.&#8221;</p>
<p data-start="287" data-end="668">It appears that Ringo Sheena and Yusuke Narita had gone to the concert together. They emerged from the venue side by side and headed toward what appeared to be a car they had arranged in advance. Narita climbed in first, and Sheena followed close behind. The vehicle departed immediately, eventually stopping in front of Sheena&#8217;s apartment building, where the two entered together.</p>
<p data-start="287" data-end="668"><strong>&#8220;It&#8217;s said that the two first became acquainted through a conversation published in the December issue of the monthly magazine Bungei Shunjū in a feature called &#8216;Yusuke Narita&#8217;s Forbidden Questions.&#8217; Narita is usually known for arriving precisely on time, but on the day of his interview with Sheena, he reportedly arrived early and appeared extremely nervous.</strong></p>
<p data-start="287" data-end="668"><strong>During the conversation, he revealed that the first concert he had ever attended using money he had earned himself, at the age of fourteen, was one of Sheena&#8217;s performances, and that she had been one of the defining influences on his musical tastes. People say that Narita, who normally remains unfazed regardless of how famous the person in front of him may be, seemed genuinely captivated by Sheena. Their discussion ranged from music and culture to their views on life, and the two appear to have grown much closer afterward,&#8221;</strong> a reporter for a sports newspaper said.</p>
<p data-start="1609" data-end="1865">Just after 9 p.m., about an hour after the pair had entered the apartment building, Narita emerged once more, pulling a small rolling suitcase behind him. He slowly made his way home, as though savoring the time he had spent with someone he deeply admired.</p>
<p data-start="1867" data-end="1975">After reportedly hitting it off during that interview, the two are said to have grown even closer this year.</p>
<p data-start="1977" data-end="2198">Narita wrote the liner notes for Sheena&#8217;s new album, &#8220;Kinjite (Forbidden Move),&#8221; released in March. It was an unusual arrangement, as economists rarely contribute to album notes, and it attracted considerable attention.</p>
<p data-start="2200" data-end="2710">Then, two months later, on May 27, Sheena&#8217;s company, Kuro Neko-dō Ltd., announced that it had signed a management contract with Narita. The company had originally served as Sheena&#8217;s personal agency and represented people closely connected to her, including her older brother, singer-songwriter Junpei Sheena, and the members of the band Tokyo Jihen. The unusual partnership generated a great deal of attention and, in a sense, seemed to signal that Narita had officially become part of the &#8220;Sheena family.&#8221;</p>
<p data-start="2712" data-end="2810">The day after the announcement, on May 28, &#8220;FRIDAY&#8221; magazine once again spotted the pair together.</p>
<p data-start="2812" data-end="3103">That evening, Sheena was performing the final show of her 2026 tour, &#8220;Ringo Sheena Party Convention: Reiwa 8 Archipelago Tour,&#8221; in Takasaki, Gunma Prefecture. Shortly after 9:30 p.m., she entered a chauffeured car waiting outside the venue and headed to the city hotel where she was staying.</p>
<p data-start="3105" data-end="3572">Narita had left through the backstage exit slightly earlier. Before heading to the hotel, he stopped at a nearby convenience store by himself. As he spoke with someone on the telephone, apparently discussing what to buy, he looked unusually relaxed. After spending around twenty minutes wandering around the store, he emerged carrying a bottle of whisky, sparkling water, and canned alcoholic drinks before heading straight to the hotel where Sheena had gone earlier.</p>
<p data-start="3574" data-end="3683">The two reunited only about fifteen minutes apart, and neither of them was seen leaving the hotel that night.</p>

<h2>The agency did not deny the relationship</h2>
<p class="PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer" data-start="45" data-end="183">A date at a jazz concert, followed by a private meeting at a hotel during a concert tour—the two certainly appeared to be extremely close.</p>
<p data-start="185" data-end="783">However, Sheena&#8217;s personal life has long attracted public attention. In 2013, reports stated that she was in a common-law marriage with video director Yuichi Kodama and had given birth to their second child. She also has a son with her former husband, Junji Iyoshi (who died at the age of 49), a guitarist who had previously played in her backing band &#8220;Gyaku-tai Glycogen.&#8221; Sheena is now the mother of three children. At the time, considerable attention was drawn to reports that her relationship with Iyoshi had begun as an affair and that the couple had married after she became pregnant.</p>
<p data-start="785" data-end="1123">Narita, meanwhile, is also married, although he and his wife reportedly maintain separate households. He has often expressed the view that the secret to a happy marriage is not seeing each other too often and that there is no need to deepen family relationships excessively, consistently adhering to his own unconventional philosophy.</p>
<p data-start="1125" data-end="1297">Although such an arrangement may be entirely consistent with Narita&#8217;s way of thinking, many people would nonetheless view the relationship as a case of double infidelity.</p>
<p data-start="1299" data-end="1377">How do the two regard their relationship? &#8220;FRIDAY&#8221; approached Sheena directly.</p>

<p data-start="1585" data-end="1725">Sheena then entered the waiting vehicle and left. Later, &#8220;FRIDAY&#8221; sent a written inquiry to Kuro Neko-dō Ltd., which replied as follows:</p>
<p data-start="1727" data-end="1781">—Are the two currently in a romantic relationship?</p>
<p data-start="1727" data-end="1781"><strong>&#8220;As previously announced, our company is responsible for the management of Yusuke Narita. The apartment building referred to as &#8216;Ringo Sheena&#8217;s apartment&#8217; also functions in part as our office, and our affiliated artists, employees, and business associates regularly come and go.</strong></p>
<p data-start="1727" data-end="1781"><strong>Furthermore, with regard to the events following the performance at the Takasaki Arts Theatre, it is standard practice for performers and other individuals connected with our productions, including our affiliated artists, to stay at the same location during regional tours.&#8221;</strong></p>
<p data-start="2343" data-end="2508">—Have Ms. Sheena&#8217;s common-law marriage and Mr. Narita&#8217;s separate-household marriage both ended? Or are the two currently engaged in an extramarital relationship?</p>
<p data-start="2343" data-end="2508"><strong>&#8220;As these matters concern the privacy of the individuals involved, we will refrain from commenting.&#8221;</strong></p>
<p data-start="2614" data-end="2758">During their published conversation, Sheena remarked that she had never been comfortable writing love songs because she considered them trivial.</p>
