A 37-Year-Old Woman, a 16-Year-Old Boy, and a Month on the Run: What Happened in the End

They had a discussion with both sets of parents present.

“I liked him, and we were dating, so I felt like I wanted to do something to help him.”

The 37-year-old woman who allegedly took a 16-year-old boy away without his parents’ permission explained her motive in court this way.

“On March 31, 2026, Chiba Prefectural Police announced the arrest of defendant Eri Shirane (37), an unemployed woman from Hiroshima City, on suspicion of kidnapping a minor. Shirane allegedly knew that A, a 16-year-old boy living in Chiba Prefecture whom she met through social media in November last year, was a minor, yet took him to her home in Hiroshima City and allowed him to stay there overnight, constituting abduction.

Later that same month, A’s guardians filed a missing-person report, and after an investigation, police found A at the defendant’s residence. When she took A away again in February this year, A’s parents filed a criminal complaint, leading to her arrest. Shirane admitted to the allegations, but A reportedly told investigators, ‘I’m dating Shirane. If I’m separated from her even by one millimeter, I won’t say anything.’”

On July 2, 2026, Shirane’s first hearing was held at the Chiba District Court, and the case was concluded on the same day.

Details of Shirane’s actions were revealed through the indictment and opening statements read by the prosecutor. Despite opposition and repeated warnings from A’s parents, she became attached to the boy, who was roughly two decades younger than her, and repeatedly took him away.

Shirane appeared in court wearing a light blue shirt on top and black sweatpants on the bottom. She was petite, around 150 cm tall. With fair skin and her hair tied back in a single ponytail, she appeared, at first glance, considerably younger than her actual age.

Around July 2025, Shirane met A through TikTok. Then in November, she allegedly allowed A to stay overnight at her home in Hiroshima City without informing or obtaining permission from his parents. The incident came to light after A’s mother filed a missing-person report. A’s parents also became aware of the relationship between the two.

Even after A’s mother told her, “Please wait until A turns 18 (before pursuing a relationship),” Shirane allegedly continued taking him away repeatedly. As a result, in mid-February of this year, a meeting was held at a police station in Chiba Prefecture with a police officer present, involving Shirane, A, and A’s parents.

At that point, A’s mother had still not filed a formal criminal complaint regarding the November incident.

Reuniting with A, who had run away from home

The prosecutor described the details of this discussion in the opening statement as follows:

“A’s mother and father informed the defendant that they did not approve of her relationship with A. A police officer who was present also explained to the defendant that if she were to take A away again without his parents’ permission, it would constitute a crime and she could be arrested. The defendant acknowledged and understood this.”

During the discussion, Shirane reportedly told A, “I wanted us to have a healthy relationship, but (your parents) both said those things, so it’s impossible for us to stay together,” and said goodbye to him. She also promised that she would return to Hiroshima that same day.

However, immediately after the discussion, A pushed his mother away and ran away from home. He contacted Shirane, and the two reunited at the home of one of A’s acquaintances. The following day, when a police officer called Shirane, she lied, saying, “I’m at an acquaintance’s place in Tochigi,” and hid the fact that she was with A.

After that, the two began traveling toward Hiroshima.

First, Shirane contacted a man in Aichi Prefecture whom she said she had met through TikTok. She had him drive to Chiba to pick them up, and then she and A stayed at the man’s home for about two weeks. Afterward, a woman in Hiroshima City, whom Shirane had also met through TikTok, drove to Aichi to pick them up. Shirane and A stayed at that woman’s home before returning to Shirane’s residence. During this period, A’s parents filed a missing-person report.

Then, on March 25, someone called emergency services after seeing the two arguing. Police officers who arrived at the scene took A into protective custody, and Shirane was subsequently arrested.

According to Shirane, A had a poor relationship with his parents and wanted to leave home. When she told A, “First, you should properly talk things over with your parents,” A allegedly responded:

“Even if I talk to them, they’ll make me break up with Shirane. I’m scared that I’ll never be able to see Shirane again.”

Despite having told herself “I won’t approach A anymore,” Shirane reunited with him and traveled toward Hiroshima. Regarding what she felt at that time, she said:

“I was scared. I knew that this would be considered kidnapping.”

“From now on, I want to properly face my child”

In Hiroshima, there were also acquaintances connected with A through TikTok, and according to Shirane, “A seemed to have fun playing every day.” After that, Shirane offered the following words of apology:

“Even though I am an adult and the other person was a minor, I am sorry that I could not turn back at that point and that I could not make him go home.”

Shirane has a husband from whom she is currently separated, and they have an elementary school-aged son together. She stated that she would cut off her relationship with A and live with a sense of responsibility as a mother for her child, who is currently staying in a care facility.

She said:

“After being arrested this time and having things come to this point, I was able to think calmly. My priority now is to give up my current residence, move closer to the facility where my child is staying, and properly face my child from now on. I want to do my best as a mother — that is what I feel right now.”

In the prosecution’s closing argument, the prosecutor sought a sentence of one year and six months of imprisonment, stating:

“This kidnapping lasted for nearly one month, which is a long period of time, and the degree of infringement on parental custody rights was significant. Despite receiving strict warnings from police officers, the defendant repeatedly committed similar acts, demonstrating a strong attachment to the victim and a high risk of repeating similar conduct.”

Meanwhile, the defense attorney argued:

“This was a case in which the victim had an extremely strong desire to accompany and live with the defendant.”

The defense requested:

“We ask that a suspended sentence be granted, as the defendant has promised not to contact the victim in the future, not to use social media platforms, and to review her living situation, including changing her residence and phone number.”

When the judge asked, “What would you do if A contacts you again in the future?”, Shirane answered:

“I will not respond at all. If he appears nearby, I will call the police.”

In response to the defense attorney’s question, “Have you ever received money from A or had sexual relations with him?”, Shirane answered:

“No.”

As mentioned at the beginning, Shirane said that her actions were motivated not only by her feelings of affection toward A, but also by her desire to do something about A’s feelings that he did not want to be at home.

The question now is whether she can make a fresh start following this arrest.

The verdict is scheduled to be handed down on July 15.
