 “I wanted to try it with the guy who’s the best in bed.”
 Riasu Mizutani, a current student at the ultra-selective K University—which requires an entrance exam score of over 70—who also works as an adult film actress, laughed with a carefree smile.
 “It’s not like I’m thinking, ‘This actor is great!’—and it’s different from being a fan of a particular star, too. I’ve always loved sex and have a strong sex drive. I just want to have sex with someone who’s good at it. I realize myself that I’m a far cry from the typical image of a woman (laughs).”
 Her first sexual experience was unique, too. “It was more like, ‘I should get some experience under my belt first so I can participate in hookup culture,’” she said, explaining that she had sex with a male friend without any romantic feelings involved.
 “Simply put, ‘hookup culture’ refers to ‘a culture where sexual relationships or temporary intimate connections—without the premise of a romantic relationship or dating—are relatively accepted.’Since I’d already been accepted to a university abroad, I really wanted to be a part of it! When I talked to a friend about it, they advised me that I should get some experience under my belt first. So I had sex with one of my male friends—someone I was close with—but it was purely for sex.
 Thanks to my experience with hookup culture, I’ve become able to naturally lead things toward sex with someone whose sexual preferences match mine, even if we’re not a couple. That said, confirming consent is crucial. We were taught this during university orientation, and it was a hot topic on campus too. My MVP in hookup culture was a Mexican guy! (laughs)”
 She’s currently working as a freelance adult film actress. She says she’s even met the “man who’s best at sex”—a long-cherished dream of hers.
 “That would be Genjin Moribayashi. It’s not that he’s good at any one specific move—he’s ‘good at everything.’ Everything is amazing. Personally, I love Polynesian sex. The teasing is irresistible.”

 There were other reasons she aspired to become an adult film actress.
 “I had serious doubts about the way national laws control sexual activity and entertainment, and I’d been personally researching the issue of sexual violence. That’s exactly when the new adult video law was enacted. I thought, ‘What the heck is this weird law?!’ and realized that if I actually went to work on the front lines of the adult industry, I could learn the details of this law and even see the contracts!‘What’s going on in an industry that’s being forced to comply with such a strange law? What are they actually doing there?’ That’s what I wanted to know.”
 Asuka Nashi broke down the new adult video law for me as follows:
 “The gist of it is, ‘Women who appear in sexy videos are stupid and vulnerable, and the only people who film them are scary. That’s why we have to protect them with this law.’ Just because it’s the adult industry, it’s treated as something abnormally special. The stance is, ‘Sexy actresses are brainwashed, so we have to save them.’”
 In fact, when she actually went out into the field , she found there was a huge disconnect —she wondered, “What exactly makes appearing in a sexy video a form of victimization?”
 “Most adult film actresses were considerate of the staff, their co-stars, and even their managers even outside of filming—there was a real sense that they loved this job and were desperate for their next gig. Right now, I’m writing articles related to the new law and participating in symposiums. As someone who’s been through it, I hope to help create a system that makes it easier for people in the industry to work.”

<h2> Words of Comfort from My Younger Brother</h2>
 Asuka Nashi’s parents found out about her career very soon after her debut.
 “For some reason, I’d sent my STD test results to my parents’ house (laughs). I guess they saw them and looked me up online. My mom was beside herself, yelling, ‘What is that job with the weird name?! Why did you get into it?! Quit right now!’”
 I was immediately summoned back to my parents’ house. My younger brother had been called there too. My mother revealed to him that Asu Nashi was working in adult videos. It seemed she was looking for his support to get me to quit.
 “But my brother remained incredibly calm and simply said, ‘If you like doing it, then that’s fine, isn’t it?’ At the time, he was engaged, and my mother was worried that my job would cause the engagement to be called off.My brother even went so far as to say, ‘She’s not the kind of woman who would break up over something like that, and if it came to that, I’d be the one to end it, so it’s fine.’ He even added, ‘As time goes by, the way the adult industry operates and is perceived will change, and I think prejudice will decrease.’”
 Rina Asu laughed, saying her friends at K University reacted with “it’s none of our business.”
 “My high school classmates, though, definitely had a reaction. Once I made my debut, our group chat—which hadn’t had a single message in years—started popping up with notifications left and right (laughs). All the guys in my class seemed to know about it and were like, ‘I’ll spread the word for you!’ No one said anything mean, though. They’re all well-bred, and I guess—in a good way—they’re just only interested in themselves.”

 She, too, was an elite student just like her classmates.
 “When I started elementary school, I was a chatty kid, and I still clearly remember my homeroom teacher praising me, saying, ‘You have such a rich vocabulary!’”
 She loved reading books to her younger brother, who was two years her junior, and by the time she entered kindergarten, she had already memorized almost all the national flags of other countries, as well as the names of prime ministers and presidents.
 “My father graduated from Waseda. My mother went to Nihon University and was a very involved mom. From a young age, we’d work together at home using the flashcard materials from Kumon.”
 Due to her parents’ work, she studied abroad in the UK starting at age 8 and returned to Japan midway through her first year of junior high. She transferred to Shibuya Gakuen Shibuya Junior High School—an ultra-selective school with a standard deviation score exceeding 70, commonly known as “Shibuya.”
 “During junior high and high school, I was a typical ‘fujoshi’ otaku with a serious case of ‘chuunibyou.’ After being groped on the Saikyo Line, I developed a deep aversion to the sexual stares of real men. I was a weirdo who just wanted my favorite manga character to think, ‘You’re funny!’”
 I never had time for romance; instead, I focused on my studies while being active in the debate club. When it came time for college entrance exams, I applied to Harvard University.
 “Among my classmates, 30 percent were heading to the University of Tokyo, 30 percent to medical school, and 30 percent to universities overseas. It was an environment where it seemed like those were the only three options. It’s pretty unique, isn’t it?”
 Applying to universities abroad required writing a personal statement, so I attended a specialized cram school.
 “It was really difficult because I had to write in a style reminiscent of literary fiction. Everyone at that prep school was exceptionally talented. Ryosuke Takashima, who became mayor of Ashiya at a young age, was in my class. I still remember finishing our essays together on New Year’s Eve.”
 However, Asuka Nashi never ended up applying to Harvard University.
 “An instructor at the prep school told me, ‘I think you have traits of ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder).’ When I looked it up, I realized there were indeed many times during the essay-writing process when I felt I had a tendency to procrastinate or lacked concentration, and I lost my confidence. I just couldn’t bring myself to apply to Harvard.”

<h2>Admitted to a Prestigious University with a 0.9% Acceptance Rate</h2>
 Although she had to give up on Harvard, she was admitted to Grinnell College right out of high school. It’s incredible to think that the acceptance rate for international students that year was just 0.9%. Because of her outstanding academic record, she received a non-repayable scholarship that covered not only tuition but also travel and living expenses.
 “American universities give scholarships to outstanding students as an investment. It’s like they’re saying, ‘Please donate once you graduate and start earning money.’ However, I took a leave of absence during my junior year. From the university’s perspective, that must have been a huge loss.”
 The cause was “depression” stemming from overwork.
 “I was attending school while doing an internship at a company, so I was simply overwhelmed. No matter how tough it got, I couldn’t shake the obsession that ‘I have to be a top student.’ I couldn’t forgive myself or accept that I wasn’t able to do what I was supposed to do.
 It started with not being able to get ready for school—then I couldn’t get up in the morning, I couldn’t read text, and I couldn’t prepare for the next day’s classes…I was also hearing voices constantly. It sounded like a cat meowing nonstop. My autonomic nervous system went haywire, and I had to go to the bathroom abnormally often. Since my dorm room didn’t have a bathroom, I’d end up wetting myself. Even as an adult, I couldn’t make it to the bathroom in time. I started thinking, ‘This might actually be serious.’”
 It’s said that Rina Asu downed all the as-needed medication she had at home in one go and was rushed to the hospital.
 “My grades hadn’t dropped, and I was good at pretending to be a model student, so my distress didn’t get through to those around me. Taking the as-needed medication didn’t make me feel any better, so I thought, ‘I’ll just take them all!’ I hoped that if I was taken to the hospital, people might finally understand my suffering, even just a little.”

 After taking a leave of absence, she returned to Japan. Having lost her identity as a “top student,” Rina’s self-esteem plummeted, and she laughs, “I just partied every day.”
 “I had one-night stands through dating apps, went to wild parties at clubs, and even worked part-time at adult entertainment venues. My parents’ control was intense, too… It’s only natural for parents to worry when their daughter with depression is out partying at night, but I needed that time to just be myself—even if it meant breaking free from them.
 I was saved by people who told me I was ‘interesting’ and validated me without me having to reveal my identity. People I’d known since middle and high school just assumed, ‘You’re just taking a break to recover now,’ but the adult and adult entertainment worlds actually ‘consumed’ or evaluated me for who I was at that moment. There’s a world where you can be accepted even if you’re not good at studying. That fact meant a lot to me.”

 Rina Asu is still active as a freelance adult film actress, but she says, “My mom isn’t as critical of it as she used to be.”
 “It’s been 10 years now that I’ve been a college student, but when I say, ‘It’s a waste of money, so maybe I should quit,’ my mom tells me, ‘Since you’ve come this far, show me you in a hakama.’ I want to graduate from college this year and do something to honor my parents. And I want to keep doing work that I enjoy until the day I die.”
 Being an “outstanding student.”　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　Being a “returnee.”　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　Being a “student at K University.”　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　And being a “sexy actress.”
 Rima Mizutani has continued to choose a life that she finds “interesting” at each moment, without being bound by any of those labels.
 Society tends to look only at labels and categorize people too easily. But what struck me most after our interview was that she is someone who continues to choose her path based on her own values, not on labels.
 Smiling as she says she wants to graduate from college this year, she will surely continue to choose her own path—not the “right answer” prepared by someone else—but the answer that is uniquely hers.
