“Unusual Properties”

“Kansai Clean Service” handles everything from cleaning so-called “accident properties” and sorting through the belongings of the deceased to cleaning up hoarder homes where trash is impossible to clear. The company’s employees have faced nothing but grueling conditions—rooms filled with foul odors and bodily fluids, and mountains of trash that seem never-ending no matter how much they throw away. There have also been hair-raising, terrifying experiences. Here, we present an excerpt, edited for this article, from *Scary Rooms Seen by a Special Cleaning Technician* (written by Kansai Clean Service, published by Gakken), which went on sale on July 2.

One day, a mother and daughter came to visit the company. They explained that they had inherited a property in Osaka Prefecture. It was a property that had been passed down through distant relatives; since other relatives had successively renounced their inheritance, it had automatically fallen to them. They said the house had been left vacant and neglected for over 20 years.Occasionally, there were reports that “homeless people were living there” or complaints that “stray cats were coming and going, and they had even received calls from the local government asking them to do something about it. Consequently, they came to us seeking advice on “how to dispose of the property.”

Normally, this would be a matter to discuss with a local real estate agent. However, the fact that they came to Kansai Clean Service for advice made it easy to surmise that this was “no ordinary property.”

“Why us?”

The mother and son lowered their voices slightly as they answered.

“When we go to that house, ‘it’ appears.”

They said they had visited the property several times, but every time they went, they encountered the “ghost of a woman with long hair.” Neither the mother nor the daughter is psychic, yet they both claim to have seen the same woman.Just a week ago, they visited the property to check on some belongings inside, but when they peered through a window, they saw that same female spirit again. Too scared to go inside, they headed straight home—only to get into a car accident on the way back.

A single Buddhist altar bears the names of 24 people

I don’t know if it’s because of the spirits, but “It’s way too creepy. We don’t want anything to do with it anymore. Please get rid of it somehow.” That’s what the parent and child pleaded.

I decided to go view the property with them. It was a two-story wooden house built in the style of a row house, about 50 years old. The mother and son made it to the front of the house but were too terrified to go inside. Inside, it was a complete hoarder’s house.Although no one was supposed to have lived there for over 20 years, some of the items didn’t look like they were from 20 years ago. There had been a report that a homeless person had been living there, so that might explain it. Something caught my eye: memorial photos hanging on the wall. There were eight of them in total. Kamezawa took a photo with his smartphone and showed it to the mother and son waiting outside.

“Do you know these people?”

“No, we don’t. Nobody does.”

There was also an old Buddhist altar. It was well-worn and appeared to date back to the early Shōwa period. In front of the altar, pages from a memorial register were scattered about.A “past register” is a ledger that records the names and dates of death of the deceased. It’s like a handbook indicating who is being commemorated at this altar; it’s square, about the size of a palm, and accordion-folded, unfolding to about three meters in length. There were three of them. The names of about 24 people were written inside.

I’d never seen 24 people enshrined in a single altar before. Normally, the maximum would be around seven. After walking through the house and confirming there was nothing unusual, I said to the mother and child waiting outside:

“It’s safe, so please come inside.”

The mother and child cautiously entered and checked the past register. They said they didn’t recognize anyone. No one saw any spirits that day. However, starting that day, the mother took to her bed. Her condition worsened, and she was unable to get up. “That house really is strange,” the mother and child said. “We don’t care if it’s cheap. We’d even take it for free. We just want to get rid of it.” They wanted to get rid of it as soon as possible. Kansai Clean Service decided to purchase the property.
