Romance Revealed Between a Nationally Beloved Artist and a Charismatic Economist!

The Queen of the Music World and the Charismatic Intellectual—this unconventional “super-high-profile couple” had been quietly nurturing their love.

Around 7:30 p.m. in late May, a man and a woman emerged from the jazz live restaurant “Blue Note Tokyo” in Tokyo. She sported a rounded mini-bob with the ends curled outward. This woman, whose distinctive, bright eyes peeked out from behind her mask, is “national artist” Ringo Sheena (47).

Dressed in a long white T-shirt and high-end brand overalls, she walked leisurely, exuding a girlish innocence rather than an air of authority.

Walking close beside her was a man who was a full head taller than her, with a slender build and glasses. He walked while intently staring at his smartphone screen. He gave off a somewhat intellectual vibe, but…

And for good reason—he was Yusuke Narita (40), hailed as the “Reiwa-era charismatic economist.”

“After making her debut in 1998 with ‘The Theory of Happiness,’ Shiina released a string of hit songs, including ‘Queen of Kabukicho,’ ‘Kiss Me Here,’ and ‘Instinct.’Her first album, *Innocence Moratorium*, released in ’99, was a million-seller, and her second album, *Victory Strip*, released in ’00, was a massive hit selling over 2.3 million copies, leaving a significant mark on Japanese music history.

In 2004, she formed the band ‘Tokyo Jihen’ and has appeared a total of 11 times on the ‘NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen’—both as a solo artist and with the band. She can truly be called a ‘national artist’ known to everyone,” said a music industry insider.

Narita, on the other hand, graduated from the University of Tokyo and earned a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the U.S. He is known as a rising star in economics, serving as an assistant professor at Yale University, while also being active as an entrepreneur.

In recent years, he has become such a popular commentator that he appears almost daily across various media outlets, including TV programs like “Hodo Station” (TV Asahi) and his YouTube channel “PIVOT.”

Two People Drawn to Each Other’s Talent

On this day, at Blue Note Tokyo, Arturo Sandoval (76), a popular trumpeter and multiple Grammy Award winner, was performing in Japan for the first time in eight years, showcasing his latest album, *SANGU’*. It appears that Shiina and Narita had been enjoying the jazz concert together and were just leaving the venue at that moment.

Spotting a private car that appeared to have been reserved in advance, Narita got in first. Shiina followed him inside, and the car pulled away immediately. It stopped in front of her apartment building, and the two walked into the building together.

“It is said that the two met through a conversation featured in the ‘Stories You Shouldn’t Ask Yusuke Narita About’ column in the monthly magazine *Bungeishunju*, which was released last December. Mr. Narita, who usually arrives right on time, reportedly showed up early on the day of his conversation with Ms. Shiina and looked quite nervous.”

During the interview, he confessed that the first concert he ever attended with money he’d earned himself—at age 14—was one of Shiina’s, and that she was also his first musical influence. Mr. Narita, who usually remains unfazed no matter how big a name he’s dealing with, seemed to have a special fondness for Shiina alone.“The two spoke candidly about everything from music to cultural theory and their views on life, and it seems their relationship grew much closer after that day,” said a sports newspaper reporter.

It was past 9:00 p.m., about an hour after the two had disappeared into the apartment building. Narita reappeared, rolling a small carry-on suitcase behind her. It was a striking sight to see her slowly making her way home in the night breeze, as if savoring every moment spent with the person she admired.

Just half a year after they met—the entertainment industry’s most “unconventional couple” was born.

The “FRIDAY July 17–24 Combined Issue,” on sale July 3, and the paid edition “FRIDAY GOLD” provide detailed coverage of their “secret hotel rendezvous” a few days later, as well as an unexpected response from their agencies.

Shinomi walked a few steps behind Narita. Rather than projecting the air of a “national artist,” he showed his approachable, down-to-earth side.
An hour after arriving at the apartment building, Narita emerged carrying a small carry-on suitcase in one hand. Still basking in the afterglow of their date, he set off for home.
