Perhaps because she is pregnant, Anne Hathaway was seen wearing casual clothes in her private life

At a stage greeting during her visit to Japan

Anne Hathaway (43), whose starring film *The Devil Wears Prada 2* is a huge hit in both Japan and the U.S., announced on June 19 (local time; same applies below) via her Instagram that she is pregnant with her third child with her husband, American actor Adam Shulman (45).

In the video she posted, Hathaway appears wearing a loose-fitting white dress and covering her belly with her hand. Then, after revealing her noticeably larger belly, she fades out of the screen with a beaming smile, saying

“Baby, I’m all yours,”

—a playful “pregnancy announcement video” complete with the caption.

Hathaway and Schulman married in 2012 and have two sons: Jonathan, born in 2016, and Jack, born in 2019.

In fact, according to the U.S. publication *PageSix*, Hathaway kept her pregnancy a secret throughout the promotional tour for *The Devil Wears Prada 2* (released simultaneously in Japan and the U.S. on May 1), which took place from late March through May and saw her traveling the world with co-star Meryl Streep.

During the promotional tour, which began in Mexico City on March 30, she chose loose-fitting outfits, wearing an ankle-length black Schiaparelli skirt paired with a matching blazer. The Balenciaga dress she wore at the premiere in Seoul was also reportedly designed to show absolutely no signs of pregnancy.

“Even when she visited Japan with Streep in mid-April to attend stage greetings and other events, I didn’t sense any signs of pregnancy, and there was absolutely no mention of it.“She likely wanted to avoid the pregnancy becoming the main focus rather than the movie itself. Furthermore, given that this is the sequel to a major Hollywood blockbuster with a large-scale, global promotional tour, and that Hathaway was playing the role of a high-powered career woman, it’s reasonable to assume she wanted to focus on promoting the film’s content,” said a film industry source.

According to the U.S. magazine *People* (online edition), one source said:

“She completed the entire ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ world press tour while secretly hiding her pregnancy. Her work ethic is unbelievable. She’s a superheroine,”

.

Alongside a Little Life

Hathaway will see *Mother Mary* released in April, followed closely by *The Devil Wears Prada 2* in May, and Christopher Nolan’s latest film, *Odyssey*, is set to open on July 17.

She also has a packed schedule with *The Strange Case of Oak Street* (August 14, simultaneous release in Japan and the U.S.) and *Verity* (October 2 in the U.S., this fall in Japan), and things are going exceptionally well for her both professionally and personally.

Speaking of press conferences during pregnancy, I’m reminded of Tao Okamoto (41), who became the first Japanese woman to win the Best Actress Award at the 79th Cannes International Film Festival for her role in the film *Suddenly Feeling Ill* (directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, released June 19).She appeared at Cannes while pregnant with her first child with her husband, the creative director Tenzin Wild.

She attended the premiere of *Suddenly Feeling Unwell*—which was entered in the festival’s competition section held in May—alongside her co-star, French actress Virginie Efira (who also won Best Actress), and director Hamaguchi, and posed for the photocall, where her already noticeably large baby bump was evident.

She posted photos on her Instagram of herself posing naturally for the photo call without making any effort to hide her pregnancy, and wrote:

“I am overwhelmed with emotion to have been able to experience this special moment together with the little life growing inside me,”

she wrote.

Since 2009, Okamoto has been based in New York, where she has worked as a top model and actress. In 2015, she married Tenzin Wild, an editor and creator with a Swiss father and a Tibetan mother, whom she met on the New York fashion scene. She has also made a name for herself in the fashion world, co-founding the fashion brand “ABODE OF SNOW” and creating pieces that blend the traditions of Tibet—Tenzin’s heritage—with those of Japan—her own heritage. In 2023, she moved her base to Japan and has been actively pursuing a wide range of projects, including a foray into film directing.

Hathaway hid her pregnancy during the promotion of *The Devil Wears Prada 2*. In contrast, Okamoto made no attempt to hide her pregnancy during a photo call at Cannes. There are likely different “circumstances” for each—such as the impact on movie promotion or the fact that her baby bump was already too prominent to conceal.

In any case, both actresses have created wonderful works and deserve great praise; all eyes will now be on the news of their babies’ births and their future endeavors.
