<h2> He couldn&#8217;t leave his son behind alone</h2>
The Chiba District Public Prosecutors Office indicted Toshihiko Yoshii (67), an unemployed resident of Namikicho, Narita City, on June 19 on a charge of murder for allegedly killing his biological son, an 11-year-old sixth-grade elementary school student, in an apartment in a quiet residential area of Narita City, Chiba Prefecture.
According to the indictment and other sources, Yoshii is accused of killing his son, Taisei Yoshii (11), with whom he lived, at their apartment on May 27.
The case had been viewed as a tragedy involving an isolated father-and-son household. However, further reporting has uncovered a new fact: in the past, a child consultation center had responded to the family over suspected child abuse.
A reporter from the social affairs desk of a national newspaper explained the overall picture of the case.
&#8220;The case came to light after the elementary school reported that the child had not attended school since May 27 and that there had been no response when staff visited the family&#8217;s home. Police officers forced open the locked apartment door and found the father and son lying side by side on bedding.
Taisei had already died, while Yoshii was unresponsive to questioning. However, there was no clear evidence that he was suffering from an illness or had taken drugs. During questioning, the suspect admitted to the allegations, saying, &#8216;I strangled my son to death with my hands at home,&#8217; and, &#8216;I couldn&#8217;t leave my son behind alone.&#8217;
However, the body showed no obvious injuries that would directly explain the cause of death, and police are continuing to determine the exact cause through a judicial autopsy and other examinations.&#8221;
Police investigators found that after the boy&#8217;s mother died in 2016, the father and son had lived together by themselves. However, interviews with people connected to the child consultation center revealed a new fact: while the mother was still alive, the family had already come to the attention of the agency.
&#8220;About 10 years ago, when Taisei was still very young, the child consultation center responded once over suspicions that he was being abused by his mother. At the time, an investigation was launched after a referral from Narita City. Ultimately, the case did not result in stronger measures such as temporary protective custody. The records indicate that the response was concluded after the necessary support had been provided on an ongoing basis.
The mother died shortly afterward, making it difficult to confirm the details today, but it is a fact that the family was already experiencing problems serious enough to come under the watch of the authorities.&#8221;
That is what a person connected to the child consultation center told this website. Furthermore, the family&#8217;s relationship with the agency did not end after the mother&#8217;s death.
&#8220;Because Taisei showed developmental delays, the child consultation center carried out assessments several times as part of the procedures for obtaining and renewing his disability welfare handbook. I am not aware of any specific problems within the household, but there is no doubt that the father was raising Taisei by himself in an environment that required ongoing administrative support,&#8221; the source said.
According to neighbors, the elderly father appeared to be carrying a heavy burden while raising his son, who had developmental delays. Taisei reportedly attended a special support class at an elementary school located about five kilometers from their home.

A woman living nearby recalled the father and son&#8217;s daily life:
&#8220;Taisei attended a special support class. It seems his father didn&#8217;t want him to transfer from the school in the area where they had originally lived, so he rode a bicycle every day to take him to and from a school five kilometers away. Even on rainy days, he would pedal with Taisei sitting on the back of the bicycle. By the upper elementary school grades, children are already quite big, so they always looked like they were having a hard time getting around together. That&#8217;s why, looking back now, I somehow feel I can understand the father&#8217;s desperation when he said, &#8216;I couldn&#8217;t leave my son behind alone.'&#8221;
The elementary school Taisei attended has already held a meeting for parents, where they explained the emotional support being provided to students.
The father and son are believed to have moved into the apartment in Namikicho, Narita City, about a year ago. A resident living next door described what they were like:
&#8220;They started living here about a year ago. I don&#8217;t know where they moved from. The father didn&#8217;t appear to be working, but I don&#8217;t know whether he became unemployed after his health deteriorated or what the circumstances were. Still, if you greeted him, he&#8217;d always reply with &#8216;Good morning,&#8217; and his son would greet people too. I never once heard shouting or the sound of someone being hit coming from their apartment.&#8221;
A foreign woman living in the same apartment building also said:
&#8220;It was always just the two of them, and they seemed close and happy. They didn&#8217;t give the impression of struggling financially. They ate proper meals and wore decent clothes.&#8221;
To those around them, there had been no visible signs of trouble or serious financial hardship.
Behind that quiet life, however, they may have been reaching their physical limits. The bicycle with a rear rack that the father used to take his son to school remains in the apartment&#8217;s bicycle parking area, but Taisei&#8217;s own children&#8217;s bicycle was nowhere to be seen.
&#8220;That boy didn&#8217;t have his own bicycle. So seeing his father still riding around with the now much larger Taisei sitting on the back of his bicycle, I couldn&#8217;t help feeling, from the outside looking in, that it had reached its limit in terms of both his age and his size,&#8221; said the previously quoted next-door neighbor.
Beginning with the suspicions of abuse by the mother a decade ago, followed by her death, and then the father&#8217;s care for his son, the family had a history of involvement with government authorities and the child consultation center. Why, despite those past points of contact, was the worst possible outcome not prevented?
Police continue their full-scale investigation in an effort to uncover the complete truth behind the tragedy that unfolded behind the closed doors of a home isolated from society.
