<p> The man, whose body was densely covered in tattoos from his neck to the backs of his hands and even his fingers, showed no change in his listless expression even when faced with the press holding their cameras—.</p>
<p> On June 12, a 34-year-old man arrested for extorting 50,000 yen in cash from a man in his 20s at a bar in Hachioji, Tokyo, was referred for prosecution by the Tachikawa Police Station of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department.</p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> “Those arrested include four individuals: Yuya Kamiya (34) and Takamichi Hyoga (28), both of unknown occupation and residing in Tokyo, and two 19-year-old women. The incident occurred in June ’24.The victim, Mr. A, had filmed himself engaging in sexual activity with one of the arrested women. When the woman realized the video was circulating, she consulted with Suspect Kamiya and the others, which apparently led them to blackmail Mr. A.</span></p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> They lured Mr. A to a bar in Hachioji City and said,</span><span class="strongInContent"> “I hear you raped her. The going rate for a settlement in a sex crime case is apparently 4 million yen, but 2 million yen will do,”</span><span class="strongInContent"> They are suspected of making such baseless accusations and extorting 50,000 yen in cash as a down payment,” (a reporter from the social affairs section of a national newspaper)</span></p>

<p> In response to reports of this incident, comments on social media <span class="strongInContent">included</span> statements such <span class="strongInContent">as, “This victim (Ms. A) is also a perpetrator who secretly filmed the video and posted it online,” and “You could argue that the man who filmed and distributed the video (Mr. A) is the more malicious one.His method of retaliation was wrong.”</span> There were just as many comments condemning A as a “perpetrator” as there were condemning the suspects’ criminal acts. Crime journalist Taihei Ogawa says:</p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> “It’s reported that suspect Kamiya and others told Mr. A, ‘I hear you raped [the 19-year-old female suspect],’ and demanded settlement money, but it’s unclear whether the sexual act itself was non-consensual on Mr. A’s part or consensual.Judging from media reports, the phrase ‘they made a false accusation’ was used, so the sexual act itself was likely consensual.</span></p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> However, if he really did post a video of the sexual act online without the 19-year-old woman’s consent, he should have filed a police report. If he had done so, Mr. A would have been arrested, and the 19-year-old woman would not have become a suspect.“It’s obvious that the woman also intended to extract money under the guise of compensation for emotional distress or a settlement, but even so, I think this situation could have been avoided if she had negotiated with a lawyer involved or filed a police report and initiated a civil lawsuit.”</span></p>
