<h3>Children left trapped inside the school</h3>
<p class="PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer" data-start="165" data-end="446">A quiet residential neighborhood was thrown into chaos at around 11:00 a.m. on June 19, when a fire broke out at Takinogawa Daisan Elementary School in Kita Ward, Tokyo. The school has about 340 students, and the blaze erupted in the middle of third-period classes.</p>
<p class="PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer" data-start="165" data-end="446"><strong>&#8220;According to the Tokyo Fire Department, approximately 200 square meters, including the music room, were destroyed by the fire. The flames spread quickly, leaving several elementary school students temporarily trapped inside the building. More than 70 fire engines were dispatched to carry out rescue and firefighting operations. By around noon, all of the children had been rescued, but 11 students were taken to the hospital after suffering smoke inhalation and other minor injuries. The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the cause of the fire, which may have started while a heater was undergoing a routine inspection,&#8221;</strong> said a reporter from a national newspaper&#8217;s city desk.</p>
<p data-start="1169" data-end="1455">The heater believed to have started the fire was located in the <strong data-start="1233" data-end="1259">music preparation room</strong>. At the time the fire broke out, a fifth-grade music class was being held in the adjacent music room. Nearby residents witnessed the desperate efforts of the children trying to escape the flames.</p>
<p data-start="1169" data-end="1455"><strong>&#8220;Some of the children fled onto the narrow ledge outside a fourth-floor window. The flames had already reached very close to them, and there was an enormous amount of smoke. About 15 children were crouching down with their hands over their mouths, clearly terrified. A short while later, we heard an explosion, and part of the building caught fire and began collapsing. As the flames moved closer, the children screamed when a section of the building gave way.&#8221;</strong></p>
<p data-start="1926" data-end="2182">As the fire intensified, smoke began pouring from the windows directly above the children. Teachers tried to contain the smoke by holding the windows shut, but some students broke down in tears while others frantically waved their hands, pleading for help.</p>
<p data-start="1926" data-end="2182"><strong>&#8220;The teachers kept shouting, &#8216;It&#8217;s okay! Help is coming soon!&#8217; About ten minutes later, rescue personnel reached the fourth-floor ledge and set up ladders to guide the children into the neighboring building. Because each child was escorted down the ladder individually by a firefighter, the rescue took quite a while. With the flames advancing so quickly, those of us watching were on edge the entire time. We were just relieved that everyone made it out safely,&#8221;</strong> the resident recalled.</p>
<p data-start="2674" data-end="2864">Thanks to the determined efforts of firefighters and school staff, every child was rescued, and no lives were lost—a fortunate outcome in what could easily have become a far greater tragedy.</p>
