A red-light district called “Daisan Shinkōgai” near Aomori Station. It is a barracks-style entertainment district believed to have originated from postwar black markets. In May, three people, including operators of sex-related establishments, were arrested on suspicion of violating the Entertainment Business Control Law. If sex work were decriminalized, such crackdowns would no longer occur, and underground sex businesses like these would likely proliferate. (’06)
