<h3> Dragged him off the bus and attacked him with a knife</h3>
&#8220;The sound of the newspaper was too loud.&#8221;
The argument began over something trivial.
At around 10:15 a.m. on June 1, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department&#8217;s Kamata Police Station arrested Tomio Ishii (75), an unemployed resident of Minami-Kamata, Ōta Ward, on suspicion of attempted murder after he allegedly slashed a man in his 50s on the cheek with a knife on a street in the area.
&#8220;The incident occurred aboard a Keikyu bus traveling from JR Kamata Station to the Haneda Depot. There were only a few passengers on board, so the bus was not crowded.
The suspect complained that the sound of a man in his 50s unfolding and reading a newspaper was too noisy, which led to an argument. At the Hinode-dori bus stop in Nishi-Kōjiya, Ōta Ward, Ishii allegedly dragged the man off the bus and immediately slashed him with a folding knife.
The bus driver and the victim ran to a nearby police box and reported that the man had been cut in the face. Police officers searched the surrounding area and, about an hour later, found and arrested Ishii in a residential neighborhood approximately 700 to 800 meters away.&#8221;
At the time of his arrest, Ishii reportedly said that he had &#8220;only intended to threaten&#8221; the victim. During later questioning, he partially denied the charges, stating:
&#8220;It&#8217;s true that I cut his cheek with a knife, but I had no intention of killing him. I cannot accept being charged with attempted murder.&#8221;
The passengers who remained on the bus were transferred to a replacement bus and continued to their destinations.
According to some media reports, local residents described Ishii as:
&#8220;A good person who always cleans up the neighborhood. He was not known to cause trouble.&#8221;
Why, then, would a dispute over something as minor as the sound of a newspaper escalate into an alleged attempted murder?

<h3>Also reflects the problem of violence among the elderly</h3>
Conflicts between passengers on buses and trains are not uncommon. According to data from Japan&#8217;s Railway Police (though somewhat dated), there were 3,462 assault and injury incidents reported in train stations and on trains in 2015.
What factors contribute to these disputes? Masafumi Usui, a professor of social psychology at the Graduate School of Niigata Seiryo University, offered his perspective.
&#8220;Public transportation brings together all kinds of people who would normally never interact. In some cases, they have to remain in close proximity for a long period of time. When vehicles are crowded, it&#8217;s not easy to simply walk away from a conflict.
There are clear expectations of behavior in places like fine-dining restaurants and family restaurants, but on public transportation, the shared understanding of how one should behave here is often vague.
Issues such as talking on a mobile phone, typing on a laptop keyboard, handling strollers, reclining seats, or using priority seating are often governed by etiquette rather than strict rules. People talking on their phones in trains are much less common than before, but you still see it from time to time.&#8221;
Usui believes this particular case may also highlight the issue of violence among older adults.
&#8220;As people age, some experience a decline in their ability to control their emotions. Society&#8217;s norms also change over time, but some individuals have difficulty adapting to those changes.
Because they strongly believe the standards they&#8217;ve lived by for decades are correct, they may be more likely to view other people&#8217;s behavior as inappropriate or unreasonable.
In this case, the suspect may not have felt that he was doing anything wrong. On the contrary, he may have believed that he was justified in correcting someone he considered noisy.
If the other person had simply apologized, the matter might have ended there. But once an argument begins, the goal often shifts from solving the problem to wanting to defeat the other person verbally or force them to acknowledge that you&#8217;re right.
Punishing the other person becomes the objective. That escalation may ultimately have led to the use of a knife.
Some older people also have strong pride and find it difficult to admit mistakes or apologize. That may have been a factor as well.&#8221;
On public transportation, you never know who might be sitting next to you. If someone confronts you about something, taking a step back and avoiding escalation may sometimes be the safest course of action.
