His father, Hironori, was strict about his manners and attitude to life. I’m sure his teachings helped him to keep his cool during the rough times.

His father, Hironori, who raised him, was a promising cross-country runner. His father, Hironori, was a promising cross-country runner who raised Ryo-Yu. After playing for Chukyo University’s ski team, he became a junior high school teacher. His passion for children is unparalleled.

That’s what Toshihiko Takahashi, 67, former head of the Iwate Prefectural Ski Federation’s reinforcement committee, told me. Mr. Takahashi runs “Kyounso” in Matsukawa Onsen, a hot spring resort in the prefecture. He has known the Kobayashi family for about 30 years.

He said, “It’s a 10-minute drive from Matsuo Village (now Hachimantai City), where Ryouyu’s parents live, to our house. The family comes to visit us several times a week. I was also a cross-country runner, and Hironori and I have talked many times.

The Kobayashi family consists of four siblings: older brother Junshiro (30), older sisters Yuka (27) and Ryouyu, and younger brother Tatsunao (20). In addition to Junshiro, who competed in the Beijing Olympics, his older sister and younger brother are also promising jumpers and compound skaters.

In the beginning, Hironori wanted his siblings to be cross-country runners. When they were in elementary school or so, he trained them thoroughly, making them run along mountain roads with car lights. It must have been a considerable financial burden, but he didn’t compromise at all. He was so stoic, I remember advising him, ‘If you’re too strict, you’ll end up hating the sport’ (laughs). (Laughs) Eventually, Ryo-Yu began to focus on jumping, but his strong legs and feet were probably cultivated in his childhood.

Carrying his father’s passion as a skier, Ling-Yu flew the skies of Beijing.

In 2007, he attended the award ceremony for the Iwate Prefectural Citizens’ Medal with his parents. After his success, he is being considered for a second award.
