Where did a 41-year-old man with a wife and child end up after his “death escape” with a high school girl more than 20 years his junior?

After 4 Days of “Death Escape”…

On October 27, 2013, the Chiba District Court sentenced Jun Suminaka (41 years old at the time of the trial) to five years in prison (six years is the recommended sentence).

Several months earlier, in May of the same year, Suminaka, a resident of the Tokai region, was arrested by the Chiba Prefectural Police on suspicion of kidnapping a minor, and was accused of taking advantage of a high school girl, A (15 at the time of the incident), whom he had met on a social networking service and who was suicidal, calling her up, taking her around for four days, making her stay at a hotel, and otherwise kidnapping her. On the day Ms. A disappeared, the police found her in a hotel room.

On the night of the day Ms. A disappeared, her mother reported her missing, and Suminaka surfaced from security camera footage. The prosecutors charged Suminaka with kidnapping a minor. Later, he was indicted twice for sexual intercourse without consent.

The trial revealed the circumstances of the case. About a month before the incident, the defendant met Ms. A on a social networking service while she was struggling with her relationship at work. Through repeated communication, Mr. Suminaka felt that Ms. A was “reassuring ” and irreplaceable, and he began to think about leaving his wife and getting married, saying, “I want to be with her all the time.

On the other hand, Mr. A was troubled by domestic problems, and at one point complained to Suminaka that he wanted to die. One morning, on a LINE phone line he had left connected the night before, Mr. A cried and complained , “I don’t want to go to school,” to which the defendant replied , “I’ll go see you,” and headed for Tokyo.

You wanted to do it without contraceptives, didn’t you?”

After meeting Ms. A at Akihabara Station, Suminaka entered a nearby hotel to change clothes because Ms. A was in school uniform, and they immediately engaged in sexual intercourse. Despite Ms. A’s request for contraception, he said, “I’m going to kill myself anyway, so I don’t need to worry about contraception,” and had sexual intercourse without using contraception. Thereafter, they continued to have unprotected intercourse.

After leaving the hotel, they took the Shinkansen bullet train from Tokyo Station to Sendai, where they stayed overnight; on the second day, they stayed overnight in Aomori City, and around noon on the third day, they headed for the Jogakura Bridge, which they had decided to use as a suicide site. However, Mr. A said, “I’m scared. I don’t want to die. Around noon of the fourth day, a police officer found them in Aomori City, and Mr. A was taken into custody.

At the trial, the prosecutor pursued the question of whether Suminaka really thought he was in a romantic relationship with a minor more than 20 years his junior. When asked why he did not use contraception during sexual intercourse with Ms. A, Mr. Suminaka stated, “I myself thought I was going to die.

I myself thought I was going to die, so I thought anything was fine because I was going to die. Above all, I thought that the act itself without contraceptives was something that could only be done with absolute trust, so I sought it out.”

To these words, the prosecutor responded , “Talking about seeking absolute trust and saying it’s not okay because you’re going to die are two different things. After all, you wanted to have sex without contraceptives, didn’t you?” When pressed, Suminaka admitted, “…… Yes.

At the sentencing hearing, Suminaka was sentenced to five years in prison (six years is the suggested sentence).

In explaining the sentence, the presiding judge stated, “The defendant is immature in sexual self-determination and has engaged in sexual intercourse with the victim, who is incapable of sound judgment, in accordance with his sexual desires. The degree of violation of the victim’s sexual freedom is great, and there are concerns about the negative impact on the victim’s healthy development in the future.

Suminaka did not file an appeal, and his sentence has since been finalized.

The YouTube video introduces in detail how Suminaka came to believe that he was in a romantic relationship with Ms. A, the entire “escape” with Ms. A, and his obsession with Ms. A that he showed during the trial.
