Exactly one year after reports of alleged infidelity, Mei Nagano is once again stirring social media over her relationship with her former manager.

It is the second time she has been photographed with her former manager

A new focus has been placed on the distance between entertainers and their managers.

Mei Nagano (26), who was hit with reports of an alleged affair with Keita Tanaka (41) in April last year, is now making headlines for a different reason, exactly one year later.

“On April 13, ‘Josei Seven Plus’ reported that Ms. Nagano was seen boarding a Shinkansen from Shinagawa Station with her former manager in an affectionate manner. What drew attention was that the two were wearing matching branded outfits. This is the second time Ms. Nagano has been photographed with her former manager. In October 2025, they were also reported to have attended a live show and dinner together. It seems he is someone she trusts deeply,” said a women’s magazine reporter.

The male manager had frequently appeared on Nagano’s Instagram and was well known among fans. However, he left his agency in June 2025, reportedly taking responsibility in connection with the fallout from last year’s scandal.

Online reactions were mixed. Some users commented:

“Looks like they really get along.”

“The level of trust is impressive.”

while others raised concerns:

“Isn’t the distance between them a bit too close?”

As discussions about Nagano and her former manager’s relationship continue, actress Yuki Uchida (50) also made headlines around the same time by announcing her marriage to her manager.

A manager who can cut limbs

A report announced that Keisuke Kashiwabara (49), who has long served as a manager, registered his marriage on April 3. Kashiwabara was formerly a popular actor, known for appearances in dramas such as “Hakusen Nagashi” and “Shota no Sushi” (both Fuji TV), but has since retired from acting and has been supporting Uchida both professionally and privately as her manager. Even so, a wide-show insider noted that many were surprised by the marriage between a popular actress and her manager.

However, marriages between talents and their managers are not necessarily rare. A major record company insider explained:

“It was more common in the past, but there used to be many marriages between female enka singers and their managers. These performers travel nationwide for local events and concerts, where they often face unfair treatment or get involved in troubles. In those situations, it is the manager who stands as a shield and protects them at all costs. In regional areas, far from the agency’s oversight, when a woman is in an extreme mental state and the only person protecting her is a man by her side, it naturally leads to the feeling of ‘this is the only person for me.’”

He cited examples such as Aki Yashiro and Midori Mayuzumi.

However, being close to a talent does not necessarily make someone a capable manager. According to a talent agency president, a skilled manager is:

“Someone who can cut off a talent’s arms and legs.”

When asked what he meant, he elaborated:

“A good manager is someone who can, to a certain extent, cut off information and human relationships from the talent. For example, if actors are out drinking and salary discussions come up and the talent becomes dissatisfied, the manager should not sympathize or panic alongside them. Instead, they should say, ‘The other party may just be showing off—don’t be misled by numbers,’ and act as a filter that protects the talent from external noise and keeps them focused on their work. And they should also motivate them by saying, ‘If you work hard, you can surpass them quickly.’ That is what a true business partner is.”

As a typical example, the president cited the relationship between Akiko Wada and the entertainment agency Horipro, describing it as a model of strict management combined with complete trust from the talent. He said this represents one ideal form of relationship in the entertainment industry.

Managers spend more time with talents than family or friends, walking alongside them almost as destiny-bound partners. Sometimes they are the strongest ally, and at other times a cold controller. Between business and emotion, there exists a dense and uniquely entertainment-industry human drama.

On FRIDAY Digital’s YouTube channel “Entertainment Reporter Channel,” current journalists discuss behind-the-scenes aspects of the widely talked-about manager-talent relationships under the title “The Dark Side of Showbiz: Mei Nagano’s ‘Matching Outfits’. The ‘True Distance’ Between Talents and Managers.” The program further analyzes insider accounts, including how real relationships are revealed in dressing rooms and female managers’ control techniques over male talents, based on industry interviews.
