<p> Ami Honami shows off her fresh gravure in the current issue of &#8220;FRIDAY&#8221;. Her titles are extremely unusual: gravure idol, cosplayer, and &#8220;active manga artist.</p>
<p> In December 2025, she began serializing in &#8220;Ultra Jump&#8221; under the name &#8220;Honami Amia&#8221; &#8220;Stepmother&#8217;s Love Is Not Mama! under the name &#8220;Homina Mia&#8221; in &#8220;Ultra Jump&#8221; from December 2025. We caught up with her just before her extremely busy deadline and asked her about the behind-the-scenes of her &#8220;unique two-faced&#8221; style.</p>

<p> Actually, I didn&#8217;t always want to be a manga artist,&#8221; says Honami. I had been writing fanzines as a hobby since high school, but even in college, it was just for my own personal enjoyment, and after graduation, I spent my days working as a company employee.</p>
<p> After graduation, she spent her days working as a company employee. She thought, &#8220;If I quit my job once, I should be able to do anything I want,&#8221; and made a list of things she wanted to do before she died. She made a list of what she really wanted to do, such as &#8220;I want to draw illustrations and participate in Comiket,&#8221; and &#8220;I want to do cosplay.</p>
<p> I used to do illustrations for women, but I started drawing for men as well. Compared to illustrations for women, the response to illustrations for men is surprisingly simple. If I say, &#8216;I drew a sexy picture,&#8217; the response is directly, &#8216;I&#8217;m so happy! I drew a sexy picture,&#8221; and the response is direct: &#8220;I&#8217;m so happy! In contrast to the women&#8217;s market, which emphasizes context and character relationships, the men&#8217;s market has a more open atmosphere. That comfort was a turning point in my professionalism, in that I was getting paid for my drawings.</p>
<p> Having begun her career as a professional manga artist, her latest work is unique in its setting. The heroines are all mothers-in-law.</p>

<p> At first, I was trying to come up with a story that would be like a comedy competition. I submitted this idea thinking, &#8216;It will definitely be rejected,&#8217; but the editor said, &#8216;That&#8217;s a good idea! The editor said, &#8220;That&#8217;s a great idea! To keep up with the impact of the setting, I mixed in battles and romantic comedy to make each episode as interesting as the last.</p>
<p> As a manga artist, she places the greatest importance on &#8220;how to make girls look cute. She says that her skills as a manga artist are also useful in the gravure industry.</p>
<p> During the shoot, I feel like I am recreating pictures and poses that I have drawn before. As the person who draws them, I have a good knowledge of how to make the lines look beautiful and how to make them look cute, which is probably a big advantage.</p>

<p> On the other hand, the photogravure field also seems to be &#8220;the best relaxation&#8221; for her. She is a solitary manga artist who fights alone at her desk, dreading deadlines. On the other hand, at photo shoots, she is surrounded by staff and greeted with &#8220;Sensei! The editor in charge of the manga is also a &#8220;teacher.</p>
<p> I often feel at ease with my manga editors because they are &#8216;nerds,&#8217; but I have the impression that most of the gravure staff are cheerful people (laughs). (Laughs.) Being exposed to a completely different atmosphere stimulates my creativity, and more than anything, being in front of people keeps me motivated to stay healthy and in shape, even in a life that tends to be irregular. Many of the staff members I meet in gravure are very unique, and I actually use them as references for my manga.</p>
<p> In the future, Ms. Honami is aiming to break new ground.</p>
<p> I would like to draw &#8216;work-related stories&#8217; that make use of my experience as a company employee,&#8221; she says. In terms of work, a manga featuring gravure idols or cosplayers might be possible. I think there are works that only I, who am a &#8220;two-faced&#8221; artist, can create.</p>
