Mystery Deepens After Child’s Body Found in Nantan Unease Surrounds Backpack and Shoes

Backpack and shoes found as far as 5 km apart
In Nantan City, Kyoto Prefecture, where sixth-grade elementary school student Yuki Adachi (11) had gone missing, a body believed to be that of a child was found in a wooded area shortly after 4:00 p.m. on April 13. The Kyoto Prefectural Police are working to confirm the identity.
Yuki, who was a fifth grader at the time, left for elementary school on the morning of March 23 in a car driven by his father to attend the graduation ceremony as a current student. The car was parked in a lot at an after-school care facility about 150 meters from the school gate. The father’s car was captured on security cameras, but Yuki himself was outside the frame when he is believed to have gotten out.
He never arrived at school, and his homeroom teacher contacted his parents around 11:45 a.m., after the graduation ceremony had ended. After receiving the call from the school, Yuki’s father reported him missing to police.
A TV reporter covering the scene said:
“None of the teachers, students, or parents saw Yuki on the 23rd. If he had been heading to school, someone should have seen him along the 150 meters from the parking lot to the gate. Did he turn back after seeing off his father’s car and go somewhere else? There are too many puzzling points.”
On March 29, Yuki’s school backpack was found in a mountain area about 3 km west of the school. It should have been a key clue, but because it was suddenly discovered in a place that had already been searched the day before, the mystery only deepened.
On April 12, black shoes believed to have been worn by Yuki were found about 6 km southwest of the school and about 3 km north of his home. They were approximately 5 km in a straight line from where the backpack had been found.

A considerable amount of time has passed since death
The body believed to be that of a child was found this time in a wooded area about 2 km southwest of the elementary school Yuki attended. According to the Kyoto Prefectural Police, the body was discovered lying on its back, wearing a dark navy fleece and beige pants. No shoes were on the body.
“A considerable amount of time has passed (since death),” the Kyoto Prefectural Police said, adding that a judicial autopsy would be conducted on the 14th to confirm the identity.
Possible scenarios being considered going forward include an accident, suicide, or involvement by a third party.
A local resident commented:
“It’s the kind of place that makes you wonder, ‘Why here?’ It’s hard to imagine a child coming here alone.”
The backpack and shoes found in separate locations—and now a body believed to be that of a child. The previously quoted TV reporter based in Osaka told this site:
“In recent days, around 50 police officers have been mobilized. They had shovels in hand, drones in the air, police dogs, and forensic investigators were all deployed. It felt less like a search for a missing person and more like a crime scene investigation. After the body was found, the one who responded to the media was a senior officer from the Kyoto Prefectural Police’s First Investigation Division.”
He added:
“The body was found roughly midway between where the backpack and shoes were discovered. Both are several kilometers away from the body. That raises the question: what is the connection between the backpack, the shoes, and the body? There are many unsettling inconsistencies.”
If third-party involvement is confirmed, it would become a criminal case and could take a completely different turn from the investigation so far. The prefectural police say:
“We are investigating both the possibility of an accident and a crime.”
This mystery unfolding in Sonobe Town, Nantan City—a community of about 15,000 people—has left local residents spending uneasy nights. A full clarification of what happened is urgently awaited.
