<h3><span class="strongInContent"> Her parents-in-law were murdered by someone.</span></h3>
<p> What did &#8220;FRIDAY&#8221; report 10, 20, or 30 years ago? In &#8220;Playback Friday,&#8221; we revisit the topics that were hot at the time. In this issue, we take a look at the March 31, 2006 issue, which was published 20 years ago, and discuss a <span class="strongInContent">story about a Chinese &#8220;demon wife&#8221; who continued to work part-time in the sex industry even after her husband was put in a vegetative state by insulin injections</span>.</p>
<p> On March 10, 2006, his wife Yuka (pseudonym, 33 at the time) was re-arrested by the Chiba Prefectural Police on suspicion of attempted murder of Tadao Sato (pseudonym, 54 at the time), a plasterer in Hikari-cho (now Yokoshibahikari-cho), Chiba Prefecture. In April 2004, Yuka was suspected of administering a large dose of insulin to Tadao to treat his diabetes, causing brain damage due to low blood sugar levels and rendering him unconscious and in critical condition. Yuka had already been arrested in February on suspicion of inflicting severe burns on Tadao by pouring boiling water on him in &#8217;03.</p>
<p> At the time of her arrest, she had disappeared, leaving Tadao in a vegetative state at the hospital. The case became a topic of conversation in the media because she was working at a brothel in Asakusa, Tokyo (descriptions in parentheses are taken from past articles; titles are those of the time).</p>

<p> Yuka was born in Heilongjiang Province, China; she and Tadao had an arranged marriage in China in 1993, married the following year, and became naturalized Japanese citizens. She and Tadao have two boys. The couple got along well and had a good relationship with Sato&#8217;s parents, who lived on the same property. But the year after they married, the first tragedy occurred.&#8217; In the March 31, 2006 issue, he wrote the following.</p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> In 1995, a heinous incident occurred in which Tadao&#8217;s parents were murdered and their house was set on fire and burned to the ground. Yuka was the first one to discover the fire. The police are asking Yuka about the incident a year ago.</span></p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> It is said that the wife and mother-in-law did not get along well with each other, and it is also known that over 10 million yen in fire insurance money was given to Tadao at that time. It was around this time that Yuka&#8217;s &#8220;money-grubbing&#8221; nature became apparent.</span></p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> Tadao often complained that Yuka was spending too much money. He also said, &#8216;He built a house in China,&#8217; so it seems that he sent a lot of money to China,&#8221; said an employee of a restaurant where Tadao used to work.</span></p>

<p> Because of this and the fact that Tadao was insured for nearly 50 million yen in life insurance, the police believed that this was an attempted murder for the insurance money. There was also a story that Tadao, who suffered severe burns in October 2003, told a person close to him <span class="strongInContent">that &#8220;I might be killed&#8221;</span> after leaving the hospital.</p>
<p> The two children had not returned to Japan since Yuka brought them back to China around &#8217;02, and this had caused some trouble with Tadao just before the hot water incident.</p>

<h3><span class="strongInContent">Cosmetic surgery at a cost of 10 million yen</span></h3>
<p> After insulin put Tadao in a vegetative state, Yuka often visited him in the hospital, but she stopped seeing him around July &#8217;05. A woman who lives in the neighborhood who saw her shortly before her arrest said <span class="strongInContent">, &#8220;I was surprised at the complete change in my impression of her. Her make-up was gaudy, and she seemed to be a completely different person.</span></p>
<p> It is no wonder that Yuka had undergone cosmetic surgery at a cost of 10 million yen. She also ran her own brothel, &#8220;M,&#8221; in Nishi Asakusa, and was making quite a bit of money. The following is an excerpt from an article written at the time.</p>

<p><span class="strongInContent"> 《&#8221;I opened my own store last September, but I had been working in the sex industry before that. Yuka&#8217;s sister, who was already working at a brothel in Asakusa, invited her. It is said that her sister was also falsely married to a Japanese man, but she has now returned to China.</span></p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> Yuka was very popular, and she had many customers who wanted to meet her.</span></p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> One of her regular customers was a man who himself ran a brothel in Saitama and other cities, and he sponsored her to open her own brothel. He sponsored her to open her own shop, and that is &#8216;M.'&#8221; (source in the sex industry)</span></p>
<p> M&#8221; is a so-called Chinese esthetic salon that provides massage and sexual services in a room of an apartment building, and Yuka was not only the manager but also served customers. There were four to five Chinese women working at the salon. At the time, the detailed description of the services was introduced on the store&#8217;s website.</p>

<p><span class="strongInContent"> The fee was 13,000 yen for 60 minutes. First, you take a shower with the girl. After a long massage, she would receive sexual services, and the session would end with another shower.</span></p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> This is just a normal sexual massage,</span></p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> But the owner of the club, Mr. Kikuchi, said, &#8220;I think they were trying to give a unique touch to the massage. (Omitted).</span><span class="strongInContent"> There is also a rumor that they were performing the so-called &#8220;real sex act.</span></p>
<p> Perhaps due to such sales efforts, &#8220;M&#8221; was thriving despite the fact that there were many competing establishments in the surrounding area.</p>
<p> Yuka says that she had been longing for Japan. She seemed to have finally achieved success, but she was accused of two crimes: assault and attempted murder.</p>

<h3><span class="strongInContent">Words of Regret Written in Prison</span></h3>
<p> In the trial that began in September 2006 at the Chiba District Court, Yuka denied her intent to kill, <span class="strongInContent">saying that she only wanted to weaken her husband and did not intend to kill him</span>, and claimed that she was guilty of inflicting injury. She also pleaded not guilty to the charge of inflicting injury to Tadao by pouring boiling water on him and causing severe burns, saying that <span class="strongInContent">she did not intend to kill him</span>.</p>
<p> As for whether the crime was for insurance money, it was not considered as a motive, as it turned out that Yuka did not understand the complicated insurance system in Japan.</p>

<p> However, in March 2007, Yuka was sentenced to 15 years in prison. The presiding judge noted that <span class="strongInContent">Yuka injected the victim with life-threatening insulin after putting him to sleep, and that this was a premeditated and cold-blooded act.</span></p>
<p> Yuka&#8217;s side appealed the decision, but the Tokyo High Court, the second instance, ruled in December 2007 that Yuka <span class="strongInContent">injected more than 10 times the amount of insulin at once, and that the amount of</span> insulin injected <span class="strongInContent">was</span> sufficient to cause severe impairment of consciousness <span class="strongInContent">.</span> The Tokyo High Court dismissed the appeal <span class="strongInContent">, stating that &#8220;Yuka was fully aware of the possibility of suffering a strong loss of consciousness, and it is clear that she had the intent to kill.</span> The sentence was later confirmed. The 15-year prison sentence is one of the heaviest sentences for attempted murder.</p>

<p> The freelance journalist Takeo Tamura had visited and interviewed Yuka while she was in prison. In his book &#8220;Confessions of a Chinese &#8216;Poisonous Woman'&#8221; (Bungeishunju), he revealed that a letter he received from Yuka in September 2010, after a long absence, stated the following</p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> I deserve to be punished for my crime, but my child is innocent. As a mother, I feel ashamed and frustrated that I cannot do anything for my child.</span></p>
<p> In July 2009, Mr. Tamura wrote a letter about Tadao&#8217;s death. After that, Yuka continued to send him letters, but they did not mention Tadao&#8217;s death in any way.</p>
