After graduating from Ritsumeikan University, he joined New Japan Pro-Wrestling in 1999. That same year, he made his debut at Korakuen Hall and went on to sweep major titles including the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. He retired from active competition in January 2026 and is now fully dedicated to his role as president of New Japan, a position he has held since 2023.
